    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/manutd/5173664/Godfather-Sir-Alex-Ferguson-looking-after-his-family-with-attack-on-Rafa-Benitez.html
Benitez had fallen for the oldest trick in the book. Ferguson's verbal jabs had knocked him off guard and shifted his focus, just as the real priority, the Chelsea game, zoomed into view.

But it is funny how positions can change within a week. With Liverpool inactive this weekend and Ferguson plotting a route past Everton in Sunday's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, it is the United manager who is now re-engaging with his Anfield rival by unleashing a withering condemnation of his behaviour towards his managerial colleagues.

Sir Alex Ferguson delighted to get under Rafael Benitez's skinAmong his peers, particularly those managers who have laboriously climbed the ladder to reach the top, Ferguson is viewed as the 'Godfather'. He commands, and receives, staunch loyalty and it is often repaid with the odd player loan here and morale-lifting phone call there.

So his latest attack on Benitez, sparked by perceived slights by the Spaniard against Sam Allardyce and David Moyes – two of Ferguson's closest managerial allies – is no surprise. The Godfather is looking after the 'family,' but there is no lack of self-interest on Ferguson's part.

United have a quintuple to win and Benitez's Liverpool are threatening to take one of the trophies away.

By accusing Benitez of showing "absolute contempt" towards Allardyce during last Saturday's Premier League clash between Liverpool and Blackburn, Ferguson barely disguised his own contempt of the Anfield manager for his apparently dismissive gesture in Allardyce's direction.

Ferguson said: "I saw it and I'm surprised nobody else picked it up. I've never had any issues like that with Rafa, though. He's never done that - never had a chance.

"I think you should respect a manager. I don't think you'd ever get me doing something like that . You won't. You have to have humility."

Allardyce arguably stirred the hornets' nest by accusing Benitez of "whingeing and moaning" ahead of last week's trip to Anfield, a point acknowledged by Ferguson, but just as the Liverpool manager's series of "facts" about his United rival in January betrayed an unhealthy obsession with matters beyond his control, Ferguson's high praise of Everton manager Moyes on Friday came with the subtext of another dig at Benitez.

Ferguson said: "Irrespective of what Rafa Benitez says, Everton are a big club. He called them a small club, which just points to his arrogance.

"David Moyes is building a big club with a young squad that will get better. He has a good variety there, so I think he has done a great job.

"Rafa has played himself into a powerful position (at Liverpool). He wants control of all the transfers - for whatever reasons I don't know, but that's the last thing I'd want. Crikey.

"I don't know what he does in his spare time, but he's certainly not using it in the right way."

With Ferguson and Benitez both due to address the media again on Monday prior to Premier League fixtures against Portsmouth and Arsenal respectively, the hostility between the two could yet escalate further if either chooses to add to Ferguson's latest contribution.

But while the Premier League and Football Association intervened four years ago to call a halt to a similarly ugly spat between Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, neither organisation is keen to become involved in the current talking shop between Old Trafford and Anfield.

Ferguson's immediate objective is to guide United the FA Cup final, however, at the expense of Moyes's Everton.

Injury doubts over Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney are expected to clear up before the game, but Ferguson is ready to rotate his squad at Wembley to have a fresh squad for Wednesday's Old Trafford clash with Portsmouth.

With Everton eyeing their first trophy this season since beating United in the 1995 Cup final, however, knows he will be risking the quintuple against Moyes's team.

Ferguson said: "We are facing a very hungry team on Sunday because David has to win a trophy and I know he is feeling that way. This is a big opportunity for him, so we know what we are up against. It means a lot to Everton and that is not lost on me.

"When I pick my team on Sunday, no matter what the team is, there will be critics voicing their concern about not playing my strongest team, but that's the difficult position I'm in.

"Because we've got so many big games coming up, somewhere along the line I've got to make changes. Not everyone agrees with changes. There are some supporters who would like me to play my best team every game. That's impossible. I can't do that.

"If you look at [the Porto game] on Wednesday night, you're off your head to think I can play the same team again."

The bit in bold made me smile. Defo feeling the pressure.

Gerard being out of the Arsenal match has been confirmed anyway:

    http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N164064090418-0823.htm
Liverpool today confirmed Steven Gerrard faces at least another week on the sidelines as he continues to recover from a strain in his adductor muscle.
The Reds' skipper aggravated the injury ahead of the clash with Chelsea in midweek, and has now been ruled out of Liverpool's Premier League fixture with Arsenal on Tuesday night.

"In the training session before the Champions League game at Chelsea, Steven Gerrard unfortunately aggravated a small strain he had previously suffered in his adductor muscle," confirmed a club spokesman.

"A scan has since confirmed our medical team's initial diagnosis and the player is expected to be out for between seven and ten days.

"In the meantime, Steven will continue to receive intensive treatment on the injury at Melwood."

We all had a super night at the Irishkop Legends Night on Thursday,Jan Molby Phil Neal & Ron Yeats were in great forum and we raised a lot for the HJC.We don't have a final figure yet but should have that soon, but one thing for sure the night was the most successful fundraiser ever undertaken by Irish fans towards the HJC campaign.

Jan & Phil stayed out on the beer with us and did not go to bed, they were on a early flight in the morrning so just stayed up.The resident's bar in the hotel was rocking,I know a few from here were at the night did anybody get into the Private bar or the resident's bar in the hotel..?

We had Barry Murphy from apres match doing the MC and I think he was a great new addition to these nights,he was in great forum and got loads of stick for been a Leeds fan.

Thanks for the support,we have something bigger in the pipe line and if it comes off it will be the biggest LFC related gig ever held in Ireland.

Here is a You Tube clip one of the lads uploaded, have a look it will give you a feel for the night.

    Itandje apologises for memorial behaviour

Liverpool reserve goalkeeper Charles Itandje has apologised to the club's fans after he was suspended for 14 days for his conduct during this week's Hillsborough memorial service.

The Premier League club confirmed today that he had been suspended after television pictures appeared to show him smiling during Wednesday's service to remember the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans at an FA Cup semi-final 20 years ago.

'Charles Itandje has now been officially suspended for 14 days by the club while we investigate his conduct during the Hillsborough Memorial Service,' a club spokesman said.

Itandje, who signed from French club Lens in 2007, was told not to attend training yesterday under the instructions of manager Rafael Benitez.

Liverpool's players joined thousands of fans at Anfield on Wednesday for an emotional service.

'First of all, if my behaviour has called offence to anybody then I can only apologise,' Itandje was quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo newspaper.

'I am sorry, I am sorry, a thousand times I'm sorry. It was never my intention to offend or disrespect anyone.

'To the club, to the fans, and especially to the families I am deeply sorry.'

    Ferguson on Rafa's "gesture";
"I've never had any of those issues with him. He's never done it with me-but he's never had a chance."

Sure Fergie, Rafa had the chance when he hammered you 4-1 in your own backyard, why didn't he do it there? I'm glad to see that for once the boys on Gillette Soccer Saturday have called it for what it is; mind games and nothing more to it.

fair enough if itandje is saying sorry. i dunno, i watched the whole service and didnt really notice anything like that

Amazingly enough, Sly Sports were yesterday calling it for what it was too - using words usually reserved for Rafa's interviews such as "astonishing outburst" etc.

It's not much, but when Sky aren't agreeing with Fergie, you know it's bad.

Really hope that lad Itandje isn't turned into a figure of hate for Liverpool fans for the next few months, or years, I genuinely don't think there was any malice involved, just reckon hes absolutely thick.

I don't think he was intentionally offending anyone involved in the Hillsborough disaster, just the song was more than a bit cringy, and he clearly hadn't got the sense to know when was an appropriate time to make a joke about a dodgy song and when isn't. He wouldn't have the same understanding of the horrible tragedies that happened that day that the local/smarter lads do and I seriously doubt he set out to offend anybody.

I don't see why everybody is hating the lad.He moved from side to side and smiled for about two seconds.

    Inappropriate-Yes. Grossly-no.

I just think that everybody is over-reacting abuut the situation and it is much ado about nothing. It wasn't as if he was pissing on anybody there or acting the fool intentionally.

I agree with you completely that it was unintentional, as you'll read above, but given the event he was at, it can't really be anything but grossly inappropriate.

Somebody mentioned on the other thread that he was continually being disruptive. If that is the case, then I can see how it was grossly inappropriate. He should have had more tact.
