Trinnerheads and why I hate them

    Spot on OP!

From personal experience, I can't comment on Trinners, but mine was a far worse experience. Business degree in UCD, followed by a Masters in the Blackrock School of Business - now those places are cock-muncher central. I despised 90% of the people in UCD, and avoided the SU Bar like the plague.

I was also a trackie wearing Dub, bombarded with collared-up knobs from D4, and the apprentice / wannabe toffs from the rest of the country.

    My solution:

    1) avoid the place as much as possible. My pool game was superb by the end of my college years.

    2) have a small group of friends at college, with the remainder from outside the college. Culchies are generally sound with very few airs and graces. Also, I was on the UCD footie team, so most of those lads were bang-on. Actually, a lot of my mates at the time were in Trinity, so I spent a fair bit of my time there. They were Engineering students, which I have found are a far superior class of human altogether. So remember, it could be worse.

    3) avoid the majority of SU social gatherings, and the ensuing poor small-talk with people you have complete disdain for.

Some of the comments in relation to your post are laughable, especially those by Tricity Bendix, Gallardo and the Mods... You must hate yourself, I feel sorry for you, you're a racist etc. I can say that I am in the same position as the OP and I neither hate myself, nor have a chip on my shoulder, nor should you feel sorry for me as I have a very nice life indeed.

As a side point, some of the grammar used in this thread has been a bit poor - basic errors such as your / you're and there / their / they're. Has the standard of University attendees in Ireland dropped so far?

Why can't you just except people as you find them? You just as bad as the people you berate since you think you're better then them simply because of your "true Dub" background. Yes there are people you're not going to hit it off with but if you immediately just discount whole sessions of people simply because of the cloths they wear or the way in which they speak, then how are you any different to what you claim to despise. I've encountered people like you all through my college life and at this stage I'm just bored with it. Grow up young man, grow up.

I have to say that while my post was parody, like all parody its grounded in some sort of truth. I would say if you judge people on this, then you are a very sad person indeed. Everyone has their idiosyncricies (Spl?) and thats why I like them. Its only when people conform to nonsense like 'D4s are like, such pricks like' that they fall into my category of 'people I dispise'.

I am very cynical by nature but would never ever discount someone because of the way they talk, dress or carry themselves. I would hold against someone if they judged me and my character on these criteria.

First of all I am a Trinity student. Who does Computer Science. Which probably makes me not quite a Trinity thoroughbred. Nevertheless, my experience at Trinity has led me to despise 10% of students in the university.

    1) SU-haters. The students Union might have its fair share of problems and be full of social climbers who don't take the job seriously. But you have to bear in mind that they have helped a lot of people in college and they're here to represent you and make sure your voice in college, and they're the best we have for that.

    2) Trinity fashion. I see people going around wearing tracky bottoms and hoodies around the college. It's a bit of exception, but don't these people realise they should dress a bit nicer when they go to college? Where's their sense of style? It's important to realise that in Trinity you should conduct yourself with a modicum of decorum. The Lifestyle Sports thing is infuriating.

    3) Impoverished Dublin female students. Trinity has few of these, thank God. They usually wear lots of pink and black, over-sized earrings and jogging trousers. They undoubtedly have outdated and conservative views on social justice and the desire to 'bring-back-hanging'. Every evening they go back to their dilapidated shack in some sprawling estate or inner city, sit down to dinner with 'ma' and 'da' and recount tales of the disgusting poshy students that sneer at them. The middle classes really gets them down.

    4) The not quite knack types. There aren't too many so I can't be too harsh on Trinity here. But its amazing to hear 3rd and 4th year students from good backgrounds who have developed a wierd hybrid accent which nonetheless sounds like they come from the inner city, but not quite there.

    5) The swaggering, proud ignorance. These people are always quick to point out how little they've actually read and how they don't need to read books 'pretentious' old books from 100 years ago to get on in life. And that they are much better for reading 'normal books' like people do anywhere else in the country. Its bollox.

    6) The fact that loads of people will react to this with scorn or outrage. Trinity students excell in not 'looking bothered' and will undoubtedly react to this post with a curious reaction of condemnation, arrogance and attempts at humour. Ah well.

Amusing how a lot of people who read the OP and, while perhaps recognising it as a parody, silently agree with the sentiments expressed therein, but would look at this and be disgusted at the snobbish attitude.

Seriously, there's so many hypocrites who despise 'D4-heads' for their accents, yet would be appalled that someone would judge someone for having a proper 'Dub' accent...

It was actually Samuel Beckett ( I thought it was an Oscar Wilde quote, which is why I googled it in the first place). The fewer, more reliable sources seem to attribute it as a comment passed regarding Campbell College (a grammar school) in Belfast...

Again, you've lost me. I'm always in the Arts block, girls there very often wear hoodies and normal clothes.

ye most people in college dress grand, but there are a fair few people who just dress wierd. I think our sense of fashion (or at least some people's) has taken a turn for the worst.

Resenting people who put effort into how they dress is more a reflection on you than on them. I dress like ****, obviously, but I wouldn't be supporting the introduction of hoodies-only dress code just so I can feel better about myself.

i don't resent anyone, i just think some people put a lot of effort into something that to me anyway just doesn't look good. Not saying they shouldn't put in effort but maybe they need to relook their fashion sense. I'm sure i'm not alone on that.

While this thread is here and doesn't appear to be going anywhere in particular, perhaps we could use it as a place to post pictures of trains?

How about some pictures of Trinity students?

With our own Ciaran Brady of course. Now he is one man who gives history professors a good name!

evercloserunion, Denerick, regob, JC2K3, if you have nothing to contribute to the thread, don't post in the thread, it's not particularly difficult. Any more nonsense and I'll just close the thread.

If you have nothing but threats to offer this thread, then don't post on this thread. Its not particularly difficult.

There are plenty of nonsense threads all over boards. This was created as one and lasted 7 pages. Leave it alone.
