Where does 'Ireland's used Car Price Guide' get it's values?

So looking for a used car, and want to know how much cars are being sold for I got a copy of 'Ireland's used car price guide'. This is similar to the UK's 'Parkers Guide' which is the public version of what the trade used to get (called glass's guide). I just can't work out where they're getting their prices from as they seem to be a bit off the mark if you do a trawl of the car web sites. I would expect advertised prices to be over the actual selling price by a few grand but the guide seems to be well off in both over pricing and under pricing. Can anyone enlighten me?

AFAIK they get those values by averaging the advertised prices of cars for sale across the CBG magazine and website.

If that's correct, it's a completely moronic way of providing values for used cars.

Yes it's like an average asking price guide, which is daft. Some people completely over-estimate their cars, and when only a few of a certain model/type are for sale, that completely skews the alleged value in a small market like Ireland.

Actually, if anyone does want to know, there's a guy who visits garages, and gets their opinions on what the real world value for cars is, and averages them out. Only problem is he visits Alfa garges for Alfas and gets optimistic values there, and the same for Renaults, etc. So obviously an Alfa garage, will give RRP Alfa prices, whereas a non-franchised Dealership would be substantially cheaper for the same car.

So Basically your man goes up to the dealer and says 'how much?', the dealer comes up with the price he'd like to sell the car for and then adds his discount margin (i.e. the amount he'll take off the price for you when you come to buy)!! The prices don't reflect actual selling prices from reciepts, something I'd imagine the dealers would want to keep very quite. So what the guide should be called is 'Irelands fantasy guide to Car prices the dealers would like to sell a car for.' and isn't worth the paper it's printed on:confused:

    Where's that eight ball gone:P

That's only the Motor Trade Publications book (the one that's only sold within the trade)

The one the OP is referring to is as AudiChris says. based on peoples asking prices, which in turn are based on a dangerous blend of optimism, denial, and prices seen on carzone. The cycle continues...

(your first answer is correct :D )
