My number starts 083. the best network coverage I can get. And extremely cheap! Perfect for the current climate!

My number has always been 086 but I've been with all the networks except Vodafone (and Tesco, which up until now, I didn't know was a network!). Currently with 3. Changed over from meteor about a year and a half ago because of the crappy signal with them. As a serial texter 5c texts (going down to 3c texts in April, for no apparent reason :D), I love 3, and I've had no problems with signal yet :)

Serous question now - which is the best network?

In terms of expense, network coverage, customer service, price of handsets etc......

    Thinking of changing from Meteor...

086- Fairly normal people...Not really any different than Vodafone peeps but they are all like "We are free texts, any network, any time"...get over it, it's on nearly all networks now
087- Normal people..Wouldn't be too surprised to hear many people have this network.
085- People on this network bought their phone a while ago and now it's too late to change number because everyone knows your number now and they are sad they are on such a crap network...
083- People who saw 3 come to Ireland a while ago and thought they'd be the trendy ones being in the new, modern network...but they regret it now considering 3 is donkey poo
    088- ...the hell?

Well, to me, anything other than 087 signifies, 'I'm a gadfly who got tired of waiting for an upgrade on vodafone and was tempted by the shiny new phone some then-new operator was throwing at me'. Just looking through my address book, the friends who went for Esat back in the day have a series of telephone numbers after their names as they ditched first Esat for 3 for Meteor... whoever...
On a different tack, I've a friend who is doubly cursed. About four years ago, he came home after a number of years abroad and decided he needed a phone. After looking into all the deals, he plumped for a Meteor. But within a couple of weeks, he discovered that there was no network coverage in his part of the country, so he ended up changing over to Vodafone. The annoying thing is, because he had sent out so many CVs with the 085 number on them, he couldn't change his number in case a potential employer called. So now he's stuck with a flaky telephone number... and a vodafone bill...

Or anything other than 087 signifies..........i don't want to be ripped off. Also, aren't vodafone doing the whole throwing shiny new phones "scam" by having the rights to blackberry phones??
Ive changed network four times since i got a phone 7 years ago and i still have the same number i began with. Ive always changed to the best deal out there, i dont care what operator it is as long as its cheap.
But maybe im a rare thing, an irish person who doesn't like to be ripped off and trys his best not to be

I work with some people who have teenage kids. They won't change networks because their kids are all with x network and they don't want to lose the cheaper calls to the ankle biters.

    I'm 086 but I just switched to 3, keeping my 086 number.

[So I could get my LG Renoir! :D]

And yeah it's by far the best network, I'd be proud to have an 083 number, but then I'd have to give it out again, so meh.

Never had a problem with 3 before, signal was great for where I lived, even borderline 3g speeds. Phones were always cheap, texts, calls and data too.

I'm meteor. I never ever knew of any stigma attached to prefixes on phone numbers. People need to get out more.

Never have any problems with meteor. Coverage is fine, i get the €20 per month for free texts to all networks deal, so i've always got plenty of credit (i prefer to text people, rather than ring them).

    I'm pretty happy with them.

In relation to the argument brewing up in this thread, i don't care if people fall over laughing at me when i mention i'm 085. My wallet likes meteor, and i value my wallet more than other people.

    best of both worlds :)

I is 086 on meteor, would be stupid not to be on meteor, so cheap. I talk for dozens of hours every week along with hundreds of texts, all free. Top up of the month, still have the 20e at the end of the month and then I get to use that until I run out, which takes a good while. So about 100e a year, if that.

    I have 2 085 and 087 = Meteor and Vodafone.

But why would anyone care?? And tesco is 089

I've moved back to 3 for the Renoir too. Never had a problem with the network but I've been lucky enough to not have to call customer support.

My only gripe is that not many people seem to have heard of 083 numbers and so I always end up having to repeat my number and explain what network it is because people think I'm leaving out a 5, 6 or 7 after the 08 part. And it didn't help that my number starts 08333. :(

087 - (My second phone used to be my only and primary phone, now never used but kept with me because I have had it 10 years. And it's the only number everyone knows for me.) Generally business people, it's the brand of choice so they use it. They want to come across like they don't care about the price. Also the only one to work with Blackberry, so practical for the business type.

The Blackberry service and handsets are available on the O2 network too.

Vodafone are advertising the Blackberry Storm as being "purpose-built for Vodafone", but thankfully that is the only handset they can lay claim to. Blackberry handsets in general are available on other networks around the world that have no affiliation with Vodafone, so there’s hope for Blackberry users yet.

Purpose built for vodafone my hole. They just gave RIM a moneyhat to keep it exclusive to them in Ireland.

The only other mobile network in the world that offers the Blackberry Storm, and also has no affiliation with Vodafone, is Telus Mobility (Canada). Why would Vodafone pay such a large amount of money to RIM in order to gain an exclusive handset that another network also has? Vodafone’s claims of the Blackberry Storm being “purpose-built for Vodafone” don’t quite ring true and smack of false advertising.

I find that the stigma associated with mobile number prefixes and/or mobile networks is not as much of an issue anymore. The mobile networks within this country generally offer the same offers, e.g. free calls from Meteor to Meteor, free texts from O2 to O2 etc, and are capable of the same services, e.g. 3G, mobile broadband etc, so the differences aren’t as big as they once were.

There also isn’t as much of an incentive to go with a certain mobile provider, unless you’re interested in a handset that is only on one network, e.g. the iPhone, but this is becoming less and less of an issue, as most handsets are on more than one network and can be bought sim-free easier than in the past.

I'm worried now. I'm interviewing for a job at the moment, but my CV clearly displays my mobile number which is an 085.

Is there a chance I could be pipped to the post by a candidate with a more cutting edge mobile operator? :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,941 ✭✭✭maxwell smart

Pipped at the post due to your network affiliation stovelid? Well that would be a sickener!
What type of job is it? If it was someone on 087 who beat you to it I guess they would be prefered for a "on the road sales job", 086 would be an "accountant" who keeps an excel spreadsheet which calculates how much he is saving due to his price plan, 083 would be perhaps someone who works in a "creative" profession, where the type of handset says more than the network your on.....and 089? Well they're always looking for shelf stackers in the supermarkets......!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,491 ✭✭✭kingtut

Who gives a s*it as to what prefix they have?

Anyway it is your network that determines the price not the prefix. Nowadays you can switch to any network and keep your number so tieing a prefix to a network no longer applies....

and you seriously need a poll for this

I don't think Vodafone operate in Canada. If that's the case I doubt they care as they would only be paying for exclusivity in the markets they operate.
