I'm sick of being constantly put down

Im in a job which i hate. I have tried job hunting for the sake of getting out even though i imangine myself doing the new job and i imangine myself hating it. Basically because its not a career. Its just a job. I apply for the jobs cause its the no experience required type of jobs.

I have already spent 3 years in college doing hotel management but after 3 years the only thing i learned was it wasn't for me. Though i did learn the skills i can transfer from job to job, so thats something.

I tried for loads of jobs and got nothing back. And now there aren't enough jobs advertised. And i feel so bad applying for something i wont like cause there are people out there that would be more grateful for that job.

I am in a dead end job working in a factory and i know i am worth a whole lot more than that. It is an ok job but its not something i want to spend the rest of my life doing. Though i am using it to pay off my credit card and my debts so hopefully i wouldn't have the stress of debts and a minimum wage job, if i got one.

Lately i have been really getting pro active about my situation. I dont know how cause i still havn't found my passion in life. But i have applied to do some voluntary work and maybe something might come out of it.
I also want to get some career guidance, professional cv advice, and take some of those tests which tells you the careers you would be best suited to and hopefully trying them all out.

My problem is whenever i say anything to my mother about what im doing now, she constantly puts me down. Saying things like oh but you'll be still in that job of yours for a bit longer, won't you? Asking me things like, why do you want to do voluntary work, you dont get paid for it. She knows i want to go back to college (when i find out what i want to do) and all she says is, your to old for college.

I think she hates to see me trying to make something out of my life and just wants to see me miserable in a job i hate. She never once believed in me. Its getting to a stage that i don't even want to tell her anymore. Sometimes i do think im not worth it. And im hardly ever a negative thinking person, but its hard to believe anything else when im not getting anywhere.

Sorry for the long story, but i just had to get it off my chest.

You're lucky that you've managed to light a fire under tour own arse about this. It's easy to just despair, give up and accept a meaningless job in the current climate.

You really must stop listening to Mum. Anyone who believes that it's possible to be 'too old for college' really doesn't have a great grip on things, IMO. So don't take what she says to heart. It cold just be a generational thing. 'Knowing your station' is a POS that some older generations actually believe is a value to be adhered to.

Do your thing. Ignore your Mum- she's wrong.

Well don't tell her then, there is no point sharing your dreams and aspirations with some-one who you know is going to knock them. Surround yourself with positive supportive people.

You may find the book 'What Colour is Your Parachute' useful, you could get it out (along with lots of other career books) from your local library. Also your local VEC will have a free Adult Career Guidance Counsellor who is definitely worth a visit. Find your local VEC here
