Roaming on the ferry

Right, so we can (or soon can) use our phones on the plane (Ryanair).

Can you do the same on the ferry (between Ireland / UK)? Looking through the websites I can't even see mention of any real internet facilities or anything.

There are a few providers of mobile coverage on cruise ships and longer ferry routes, based on deals with AT&T, Manx Telecom, Jersey Telecom, Telenor and others

But be careful, as the tariffs are similar to satellite rates, in euros a minute

I'm thinking more ferries closer to home such as Ireland to the UK. Like on the planes too I wouldn't be making / receiving calls just SMS.

I assumed you might be, but even so don't discount those networks as being far away from their home territories, as for example Siminn from Iceland was in the Adriatic between Italy and Greece.

Call the ferry company and ask the approximate rates. And do a manual network search to stay on the land networks as long as possible

You could on Irish Ferries Rosslare to Roscoff when I was on it last september.

Was up in the bridge talking to the captain and he said don't bother with it. They fleece you.
