I'm in 5th year at the moment, and I'm kinda worried. I've added up the days I was out the other day, and I'm out for 21 days. I'm worried because I've heard before that people are kept back and parents in trouble if they're out for more than 21 days. What do I do? Most of it is genuine illness, one or two days are family events, etc.

Once you do your work in school, don't get into any hassle, have good grades etc you won't have a problem.

Firstly I doubt that there will be any problems. School Welfare officers are way overloaded with much more serious cases than yours.

If most are for illnesses you could also get your GP (if you attended him or her) to write you a letter confirming the dates that you were sick and what you were sick with.

You are more than likely over the age where you can leave School legally (16) so they are probably more concerned with people who are under the age.

They really dont enforce this from my experience anyway.
I know some people who have missed easily nearer 70 or 80 days and dont do a tap in school and have had no problem.
    Dont worry about it

    Thats crock.

    Let me say that again,

That is a load of looney crickety crock.

While you should definitely aim to attend school as much as possible, you will not get held back from attempting your 'Cert. You pay, you play.

Your school may stipulate that if you have enough unexcused absences (doctor's note, etc) that you will be asked to take the test at another school, but you will never be barred from sitting the exam, which you have paid good money to sit.

I missed well over 50 days and was late every other day in 5th year, nothing was said because i'm a nice guy and i do my work.
    I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi, I'm a teacher myself. When a student has missed 20 days we are obliged to notify the NEWB (National Education Welfare Board) and nothing ever happens! The NEWB simply sent a letter to your parents saying that the school has informed them that their child has missed 20+days from school and asking your parents to give them a call. I have known situations where the parents never called the NEWB and never heard anything from them again. Some parents ring and just explain that their child was sick the days he/she was absent and that is fine. Believe me you have nothing to worry about. I have been teaching a student who has missed at least 40 days last year and agin this year and where intervention is needed and the NEWB still don't do anything!

If you were absent from school for a genuine reason, then you really have nothing to worry about. Just make sure that you are not behind as a result of your absences.

Are you serious....you're worried over 21 days? A lot of people in my class alone have missed FAR more days then that and have had absolutely no problems. They don't do much unless your constantly out.

When I was very young I missed most of junior infants due to genuine certified illness, my parents home schooled me as best they could and I was actually ahead of the class in senior infants...another serious illness in 5th class and I was out 6 weeks (all certified), my parents kept up to date with what was happening and home schooled again, no problems this time either. If you have a genuine certifed illness then I can not see a problem...

I could say i was 21 days present in college and had no troubles getting through...
But then i'm in college and they don't take any attendance for classes so it doesn't matter much.

But i'ld say for you, make sure you get good grades and don't get into any hassle in school with the teachers or anything and you should be fine...

    hey op,

Don't be worrying I missed much more than that I got a few letters sent home to my parents but otherwise nothing was done. I sent in Doctors Certs and that so they couldnt say anything. So dont be worrying and just concentrate on your exams.

What age are you OP? I've a feeling it doesn't matter once you're sixteen or over ... not 100% sure on that though!

It does. Once you're in school you play by their rules, no matter what age you are.

Their rules though. What about social welfare's rules?

Wouldnt worry at all, missed about 70 days between 5th and 6th years and did grand in the quiz. Very little said to me, couple of late detentions but once I turned 18 just ignored them completely, signed myself out of an afternoon etc.

That said my school was fee-paying (shock horror, dont have a go) so they probably didn't give a flying shít once they kept getting money.

You have to complete 3 years of secondary education (to the NEWB satisfaction) and reach the age of 16 before you can stop looking over your shoulder. If you're 16 years old and you have 2 years of secondary education under your belt, afaik in theory if you've come to the attension of NEWB they can pursue you to complete the third year even though you're 16 the school leaving age. I don't think students who've completed the mandatory 3 years of secondary education and are over 16 have anything to worry about. However a poor school attendance record if you've not been sick is a bad habit to get into. If you go on to college or take up employment the habit will go with you.

Scawgeen is true about how it affects you in college and work when you get older.

But as long as you've the grades - i.e., not failing everything - then you won't get their attention. Also, it's just 21 since march. It's really not that much.

You can get a note from your GP or parents. If you're lying and you weren't sick, then just keep going to school and doing your homework and they won't notice anything.

This is ridiculous. There are too many students on this thread talking of missing over 21 days of school.

    Why?

21 days is over four weeks of school

The Government spends billions on education.

Unless you are genuinely ill you should not be missing school!

.....and I'm sure you payed for that school with your own money!

You obviously have no clue as to the value of money. Good luck in the working world or are mummy and daddy going to take care of that aswell

Isn't there something that if you don't attend school, your parents can't get the child allowance benefit? I could be getting this all wrong, but I think that's what I heard recently!

OP, don't worry, for one you should be over 16 years old being in 5th Year. Therefore NEWB have nothing to do with it. It's up to your school to enforce their own rules if need be, but as you say you were sick, and if you have doctor's certs etc then there's no problem.

I remember from my school days not attending a whole lot in 5th/6th year, because I was over 16 years old the school didn't mind, just the Guidance Counsellor took me aside one day to ask if everything was ok.

21 days is nothing to miss though, chill out!

The school sends the attendance returns for the end of each term, I assume it's 21 days you've missed since last September or is it 21 days since Christmas.
