What exactly is a Distinction?

Hi, I am currently finishing a higher cert in GMIT and am hoping to gain a distinction in my end of term exams so I may get offered a place in year 3 of a degree programme. I am just wondering, does a distintion overall mean an A in every subject, or does it mean an average of an A (70%)? So would I have to get 70% or over…

A distinction is 70%+ (otherwise known as a 1.1)

60%+ Merit 1: 2.1
50%+ Merit 2: 2.2
40%+ Pass

You don't have to get 70+ in every subject, you only have to get an average of 70 or over to get a Distinction.

For a Higher Cert and an Ordinary Degree it is called a Distinction.

For a Higher Degree it is called a 1.1.
