well, i'm sitting here stuffing my face with a subway and thinking bout what i'll do tonight - prob go for a run then head to gym for some weights. my running isn't going great but i have decided to go out on the roads as it is tougher than the treadmill, so i figure if i can do 3miles in 30 mins by the 11th april I'll be prepared! I can't do that yet though, can't run for more than 2 miles at the minute so I am trying very hard to keep motivated and get focussed (PMA haha!!)

Plus I am about 5'7"-5'8" so tall-ish for a girl, which apparently helps with push/pull, just need to keep at the weights - need to develop some muscles!! don't want madonna arms though....

    what about your training?

can you believe that this time in 5 weeks we'll be back from our few days team bonding and getting stcuk into classes and study?!!!

oh and the subway was good, thought i would treat myself and am glad I did!

firstly get a good pair of running shoes they dnt have to be expensive ,, a pair for 30 quid are just right. they make it alotttttttt easier on your legs.

second listen to ur mp3 player and just zone out and forget ur running, if u concentrate on each step it'll get harder.

And third set your goal ,, where you want to run to and how long you want it to take and just go for it,, you have ages left to practise so dnt b worrying lol

cool, thanks. I've got good running shoes and my mp3 player is loaded up with rocky tunes to keep me motivated!! am trying to figure out 3 mile loops where I live so that once I get the first half over I'll know I'm on the way home and hopefully that'll keep me going! Practice is the main thing I need....

oh and I think you should add 4thly, stop pigging out on subways haha! I need to be told sometimes!

    thanks

As we dont have much time to get fit fartlek training is probably a good idea. It basically means combining running at different paces when you head out for a run i.e. warm up, 1-2k at a good stiff pace say 80%, then slow down to a slow jog for 1-2k then repeat for the perscribed distance. The intensity and length of the fast runs of can be varied according to fitness but it should be kept at a level which is difficult. This kind of training encourages increases in both speed, endurance and lactic threshold so should help with bleep test, circuits or whatever else they might throw at us. I find that it also helps to break up the monotony of just 'going for a jog'

In terms of weight/ strength training concentrate on body weight excercises; pressups, chins, burpees, squat thrusts etc. Do your sets to failure i.e. until you cannot complete another rep. Remember how many you did then when you go back try to beat that number.

Specific training for the push pull test would be; seated row, bent over row, single arm barbell row, rowing machine (you see a pattern developing) and bench press/ dumbells. The same principal of training to failure applies. It will hurt but this is what encourages your body to adapt

    Hope this helps a bit

Eeeeeeeekkkk! I've just been reading all these posts about the exercise and its scaring me. Like the rest of you I've been thinking that I need to get my bot bot in gear regarding the getting fit. Now I do spin classes alot but thats mainly it. So last ngt I went out for a run, with my lovely husky (i wish i had his stamina!). I don't think I did that bad, was expecting a lot worse but I'll have to get a route sorted out that I know is 3 miles! So i've got all that in my head about building up my fitness and now weights is being brought in to the equation lol. What is the push/pull test and should I seriously be considering incorporating weights in to my exercise?

BET0409 - Im like you 5ft 7" - 5ft 8" in height so you reckon thats gonna help me?

I've been told it will be easier for us as we have more height and therefore more leverage, but I am still a bit worried about it - have heard of people failing on the push/pull test, don't think they chuck you out but you do have to go back and repeat it and pass.

If you go to gym try to do some of the weights cpn described above - I don't do all of them as my gym doesn't have many machines, I do chest press and shoulder press, and set the rowing machine to a higher resistance. My gym instructor told me just to keep doing push ups til my arms give out, and every day try to improve the number of reps, so I started doing that yesterday morning, but I am a weakling. I am a bit late in the day starting all this so don't worry, you will def be fitter than me, we just need to keep at it!!

Plus, think of all those people on our intake not on the boards who won't be getting all this advice, we are lucky to be warned in advance! You're already at an advantage by doing spin, those classes are some workout so you must have a good level of fitness and leg strength already, just do some push ups every morning/night too! We'll get there (I hope...)

cpn - are you a PE teacher?? Or fitness instructor? Good knowledge and thanks for the tips!

Meant to say, it is pushing and pulling an average of 26kg over a 20 second time period (I think, please someone correct me if I am wrong!) - did you ever get the PSNI DVD at the assessment centre? It shows you on that DVD what the test looks like, if you watch that you will see why height could help.

PS don't worry too much, I think I said to you in a PM I know people who have recently passed the PCA and they don't do any exercise at all, I think its still a good idea for us to train so we don't risk it or feel wick but don't stress over it too much (says me, sitting here nervous as anything haha!!)

the best thig to do for push pull test is benchpress ,,, only do wot u feel safe with ,, im benchn about 500 reps at 105 kg but ive been doin that for over couple years so start at wot u can do.

its hard for us bigger guys running , im 6ft5 and 14 stone so its hard on our legs so id say the smaller ones have an advantage on us in the running ,,, but reli i dont think the fitness will be anything tough its just a basic level so we shud all pass

pressup wise, doing bench press for a week or so then doing pressups makes it so much easier because it builds the muscle. when i was 14/15 in PE class i could hardly manage 1 cause i was so lazy. now i could wap out about 50 before dieing and im skwrany as and i havent done any in a while. once you can do 20+ youll find it alot easier!
