Midi keyboard problems

    Hey all.
    I have a very basic understanding on midi but am eager to learn. I recently bought a midi keyboard. a nice CEM. only thing is im running Vista and there is no support for this. drivers for the board i have go up to XP only. no reply to emails etc from support. Id like to use this for recording etc and live also if possible.
    So, I know Xmusic do a 1 in / 1 out Midi to USB for about €50. Do ye think this would avoid having to use the CEM driver?

    Also if i wanted to use this live is there a decent cheapish (~€100) device i could use to get some good sounds into a PA without a laptop?

    If its a UF series keyboard you can get it to work under Vista:

    1) Install the UF driver on the cd. After the installation, Vista says that a file .INF is incorrect so we need to alter this.

    2) Go on the directory of your UF driver (should be something like C:\program files\uf\driver..) and find the file MDUSB.INF. Open this file with notepad and delete all its content.

    3) copy & paste this in the now blank file:

    [Version]
    Signature="$CHICAGO$"
    Class=MEDIA
    provider=%MSFT%
    LayoutFile=layout.inf
    DriverVer=11/07/2005,1.0.5.0

    [SourceDisksNames]
    0="DDK MdUsb Sample",,,

    [SourceDisksFiles]
    Mdusb.sys=0
    Mdusb.inf = 0
    hxdll.dll = 0

    [Manufacturer]
    %MfgName%=Microsoft

    [Microsoft]
    %USB\VID_7104&PID_2202.DeviceDesc%=Mdusb.Dev, USB\VID_7104&PID_2202
    ;;;%USB\VID_2702&PID_2702.DeviceDesc%=Mdusb.Dev, USB\VID_2702&PID_2702

    [PreCopySection]

    [DestinationDirs]
    Mdusb.Files.Ext = 10,System32\Drivers
    Mdusb.Files.Inf = 10,INF
    MIDUSB.Files.User = 10,System32

    [Mdusb.Dev]
    CopyFiles=Mdusb.Files.Ext, Mdusb.Files.Inf,MIDUSB.Files.User
    AddReg=Mdusb.AddReg

    [Mdusb.Dev.NT]
    CopyFiles=Mdusb.Files.Ext, Mdusb.Files.Inf,MIDUSB.Files.User
    AddReg=Mdusb.AddReg

    [Mdusb.Dev.NT.Services]
    Addservice = USBMIDI, 0x00000002, Mdusb.AddService

    [Mdusb.AddService]
    DisplayName = %Mdusb.SvcDesc%
    ServiceType = 1 ; SERVICE_KERNEL_DRIVER
    StartType = 3 ; SERVICE_AUTO_START
    ErrorControl = 1 ; SERVICE_ERROR_NORMAL
    ServiceBinary = %10%\System32\Drivers\Mdusb.sys
    LoadOrderGroup = Base

    [Mdusb.AddReg]
    HKR,,DevLoader,,*ntkern
    HKR,,NTMPDriver,,Mdusb.sys
    HKR,Drivers,MIGRATED,0,0
    HKR,Drivers\midi,,0,

    [Mdusb.Files.Ext]
    Mdusb.sys

    [Mdusb.Files.Inf]
    Mdusb.Inf

    [MIDUSB.Files.User]
    hxdll.dll,hxdll.dll,uniquetempfilename,2

    ;
    ;

    [Strings]
    MSFT="Central Music Co."
    MfgName="Central Music Co."
    USB\VID_7104&PID_2202.DeviceDesc="UF USB MIDI Driver"
    ;;;USB\VID_2702&PID_2702.DeviceDesc="UF USB MIDI Driver"
    Mdusb.SvcDesc="UF USB MIDI Driver"
    MIDUSB.SvcDesc="UF USB MIDI Driver"

    4)Go to Device Manager in Control Panel and find the CME device on the "unknown device" list next to a exclamation mark

    Double click on this and on the "General information" page -> click on "Reinstall driver" and "Find manually software on the pc" and select the directory of UF driver...(C:\program files\uf....etc etc)

    5) Now it should work.

    thanks a million for the help there. that got the driver installed. did you come up with that yourself?
    for some reason i cant seem to get it to work with reaper software however.
    im using a Line6 X3 live mainly with reaper with no problems. when i go to add the UF6 in preferences>midi devices it allows me enable it but says "the following midi inputs could not be opened: UF Midi In" Do you think it is some way clashing with the X3?

    Yeah, you will have to single track them or get an audio interface that takes a DI/Line and midi at the same time... Same happens to me with my midi keys and X3.

    It sees the X3 and the midi as 2 seperate interfaces, you can only use one at a time afaik...

    thats a pity. i suppose ill have to try and use fruityloops or something similar for the time-being just to get a sound out of this keyboard.
    many thanks
