Rust spots appearing on guitar hardware

    Jamming away last night and my mobile rang so I answered.

    Messing around with the whammy bar whilest on the phone and noticed it was rough, on closer inspection I notice it was little spot of rust and its on my tuners too :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

    Sickened I am. What can i do about this? Will rubbing it down with a clothe damp with wd40 do this trick or what would you recommend?

    With just a soft cloth or something? No cleaning product?

    How do i get rid of the rust already on it?

    w nice cloth and some wd40 is a nice quick fix... my strat and rg bridge is eroded from my sweat in bits

    Just a cloth. You need to get rid of the water that'll cause the rust. As for getting rid of the existing rust, you'll need something more abrasive than a cloth.

    Some people are paying mad money for "fake" rust on guitars!! C'mon, wear and tear is great.

    I love the bit of belt buckle rash on my Les Paul :)

    A very tiny amount of 3-in-1 oil might be good for the rust. I'd say don't let any liquid such as wd-40 soak into the wood of your guitar.

    The WD in WD40 is for Water Displacement, so it's quite good for this kind of thing. As mentioned, don't let it get in contact with the wood though.

    Personally, I see oxidisation and the laws of physics as inevitable, so I wouldn't get too upset over it. Your guitar will show wear as it gets played and ages. I quite like it, tbh.

    On some instruments it looks good, on others not so good...

    I usually give mine a wipe down after playing, not so much on my Les Paul which has nickel hardware but on my bass with Gold hardware it's a necessity. I think nickel hardware looks good when it tarnishes. :)
