Maybe the Robbie Keane figures are questionable, but the rest seem ok, and a couple of million don't change average spend by too much.

    http://lfchistory.net/transfers.asp

Come on , get real you cant defend the Keane debacle ,on every sense it just showed how far Liverpool have fallen. The above statement is typical of die hard Liverpool fans who will blindly fight for what they love even if it is the Germans in ww2!

What you think or perceive to be true on the matter doesn't really count for much to be honest. If you do not accept the facts that he is using to back up his argument, provide some links to the figures that you are basing your assertions on.

If Rafa's net spend is less than 20 million a season though, a few people need to stfu.

Busted Flush, the fact that you titled your first post on this page "the tall and fall of liverpool football club" is delicious. Yummy.

On a related note, what team do people think we'll see in the Champions League on Wednesday? :)

Rafa's net spend is less than 20m a year. Won't stop the media and the sky sports generation fan from saying he has spent 7000 Billion on players now does it. The fact that we are going to Madrid this week as favorites to progress in many peoples eyes should be proof enough of the amazing job Rafa is doing at the club. Long may he reign.

Well, there's this or this. I don't feel any source can be completely accurate, but quoting a site which is going to be fairly biased doesn't make much sense either! Even thinking back over the players he has bought and sold, £16m doesn't seem right to me, do you think it's accurate?

Why do you think it's too low? Because you read sources like the two you gave below.

The first of those lists Torres as costing 26 million. Rafa himself said it was 20, so we can discard this as credible. Likewise the second one, who plucked a figure of 38 million euros out of thin air. I'm pretty sure the Euro/Sterling exchange rate has never been 2:1

wtf are you talking about? What statement? The statement that the transfer figures for Keane were questionable. How did you read that, and come up with the above reply?

I'm not going to get into this whole Torres transfer fee crap again as it's clear, no Liverpool fan on this thread will accept that it was greater than £20m...this argument has been done to death with no headway made on either side whatsoever!

    On 4th July 2007, €1 = 0.6757568902p so €38m = £25.68m

Torres would be cheap @ 40 million pounds. So well done in getting him, however as far as I'm concerned that was his only good buy. The likes of Kuyt(even if he did have a good game yesterday), Babbel, Crouch, Nog, Keane are all strikers who he has paid imo vasts amounts of money on (nog perhaps not) who for one reason or another under his reign they just did not cut the mustard. I dont know what their combined fee is but it sure is a pretty penny. He simply does not have an eye for a bargain when it comes to a strikers. Torres was being touted all over Europe as the next white hope so he does not count, Kuyt was supposed to be a 15/20 goal a season machine..., babbel he suggested was the next van basten(lol), crouch was a victim of Rafa's idiosyncrasies by my reckoning any time he played he did quiet well so by that logic the best thing to do with a striker who is scoring is to sell him!!!!!! Nog so far he looks poor but to be fair he needs time, Keane well it took him a while to settle , and i found it interesting that he played his best games for Liverpool when Rafa was convalescing after his kidney stone debacle. Point ; if Liverpool had spend their money more wisely the could possibly have 2/3 world class strikers on their books instead of one who is injury prone. Take a look at Man utd for eg, Rooney, Teves, Berbatov,Ronaldo(has played as a main striker a fair few times this year) and then they have Manucho and wellbek lurking in the background too. Rafa is just not good enough!

Yes, Torres is Rafa's only good buy. Case closed.

    PS: His name is N'Gog

so mourinho is not good enough either based on that logic ;) he spent far more than rafa on the likes of SWP, Mateja Kezman, Andrei Shevchenko and Florent Malouda, at least rafa got rid of crouch, bellamy for more than he bought them for, can't say that for chelsea.

i don't understand the Ngog signing, neither did i understand the Voronin signing but having said that what the hell was ferguson at when he signed David Bellion, alan smith, Diego Forlan, Louis Saha all around the same time for about £35-40m

Kuyt this season has 9 goals and he has been playing mostly on the right. Last season he got 11 and 14 in his 1st season.

NGog is still young and could turn out bad.

Keane never got a chance to settle and Rafa i think got pissed off with the media highlighting it all the time when at the time Keane was playing better and Berbatov.

I would be happy if Krisztian Nemeth got a chance near the end of the season just to see how good he is in the 1st team after ripping apart the reserve league last season.

I would also give Daniel Pacheco and Adam Hammill a chance next season.

This comes back to my earlier point again comparing your selfs to clubs who simply dont have Liverpool's history, pedigree and tradition. Yes Chelsea have won the premiership twice in the last few years but before that and the abravomich money very very little else. I think one of the main reasons they did win it was down to their manager at the time Moruinero, the simple fact remains that since he left they have won nothing. SWP is a winger, kezman and sheva flopped true, and malouda has yet to deliver too. However he did sign , Drogba, Essien, chezh and Cole to name a few all who have increased in value and all who he got the mix with lampard , terry and joe cole to form a title winning team! Rafa had Gerrard, and Cara on the books when he arrived and his purchases simply have not worked out at the level that is expected . Sorry i know it is a hard pill to swallow but to sooner the man goes the quicker liverpools fortunes will change. So i hope he never leaves!

    Shocker.
    http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_4963675,00.html
Steven Gerrard has been included in the Liverpool squad for Wednesday's UEFA Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

The talismanic midfielder has been sidelined since limping out of the Reds' FA Cup defeat to Everton earlier this month with a hamstring injury.

It was suggested last week that he might return for the Premier League match with Manchester City on Sunday but Rafa Benitez decided he was not quite ready.

However, he took part in training on Monday morning to provide Liverpool with a timely boost after the 1-1 draw against City.
    Special

Benitez told the club's official website: "Steven will be in the squad. He was okay in training this morning.

"It was a special training session so we were not testing him 100 per cent, but he trained okay so we will see."

He is now poised to travel to Madrid with the rest of the Liverpool squad ahead of the eagerly anticipated match at the Bernabeu.

The Reds will be looking to take command of the last-16 tie, with the second leg to be staged at Anfield on 10th March.

It really is great to see that so many supporters of others clubs really have Liverpool's best interests at heart - wanting a better manager who'll sign better players, etc.. for our club. Can't ya just feel the love..

If & when Rafa leaves I think we should have a poll to propose one of the many arm chair managers here to be the one to take the club forward. I'm sure the owners/board would be very welcoming of the idea. G&H certainly would as it would save them a few quid and we know Rick always likes the easy option.
