i was referring to the last few seasons.......1 champions league and fa cup to benitez and 1 league and fa cup to wenger. Charity shields? not sure if id call that a trophy.

No, I'd only count Cups and Leagues...none of these one off matches!

Wenger took his first Management job in 1984 and Benitez took his in 1986.

    Wenger has won:
    4 leagues, 6 Cups

    Benitez has won:
    U-19: 1 League, 2 Cups
Senior: 2 Leagues, 1 Cup, 1 Champions League, 1 Uefa Cup
I think it works out at just over 20 million..

Per season? I thought it was about that!

The reason United's squad is currently more expensive is because Fergie spend his money on less more expensive players in general, while Rafa bought more less expensive players.

    That's too cryptic. It's 2.00 on a Saturday morning.

The Champions League does stand out.

    Benitez.......2 finals, 1 win.

    Wenger......1 final, 1 loss.

PS. Wenger is sh*te in Europe, sticks out like a sore thumb.

True, I wouldn't say Wenger is ****e in Europe though, but I think we should have won it by now and I'm sure he'll get there. I don't think Liverpool will ever win the league under Rafa though!

Of course he can make it. He's had a bad couple of weeks and made some silly (and costly) mistakes. However he still has good technical skills and a willingness to work hard. And he's still young. The odds of him turning into a top class player have lengthened - but stranger things have happened in football...

I've been away for a while and missed a few matches.

Wasn't good to read the last few match reports, fairly depressing actually.

I know 99% of you here love Benitez but he can really annoy me with some of his crap these days.

Losing millions of £STG (£8m?) on Keane is one thing which I know is not entirely his fault but it his partly his fault. Proving Alex Ferguson right about the fact that we paid too much for Keane is another, especially after having an untimely dig at him and them letting Utd go top, it just seems to have gone 'arseways' now.

At least we got 3 points earlier though to bring us back to the top but the performance was unconvincing all along.

But we could win Europe. We'll still take Europe over the League, even this year.

I don't care who it was directed at as this is a discussion thread, but I really am sick of hearing about Robbie Keane.

Comparing Rafa's spend to that of Wenger or Fergie over the last few years is absolutely pointless as they were coming from different positions - the later two had been in their respective gigs for many years and had established teams so have been tweaking them here or there. Rafa on the other hand came in to a team which needed overhauling for various reasons (some crap players, some aging players, some players whos contracts were up and not worth re-signing, etc..) People can talk about their respective net spend over the last few years as if it means something but it's simply not a like for like comparsion.

Comparing it to Chelsea is also pointless but for different reasons

Correct it is a discussion thread, and a Liverpool discussion thread at that. I did not want to bring up the Robbie Keane subject again, but I'm not going to let somebody come out with what was said and not reply.

I think you'll find, in the countless discussion on the topic, and I mean countless, that most people will agree that United and Liverpool have roughly similar net spends since Benetiz joined Liverpool, Chelsea have significantly more, Arsenal having significantly less.

What this means as Rafa as a manager is open to much debate, but the sheer numbers just aren't. Fergie and Benetiz have had fairly similar net spends since Rafa joined Liverpool.
The reason United's squad is currently more expensive is because Fergie spend his money on less more expensive players in general, while Rafa bought more less expensive players.

The thing about this though is that by the time Rafa came along Fergie basically had a squad that he was happy with, a squad that he had moulded. So all he had to do was add one or two little gems to his team every season.

Whereas with Rafa he inherited a squad that he wanted to change radically. Rafa only had on average about £20m a season to spend so most of that had to go on building a squad that was his. Only now that Rafa seemingly has a squad that he is happy with he has begun to use the bulk of his budget (Rafa also has always had to sell to buy, I don't think Fergie has that problem at all; he's just given a budget whereas Rafa has to raise a significant amount of his) on trying to acquire world class players to add to that squad.

Before I start this discussion again, maybe we should move it to a different thread? Somebody want to start it? We haven't had it in about a year so I'd imagine lots of new people to the board might not realise how wrong their view of Rafa's finances is. [Except of course those who disagree with me :)]

Just to get an idea, think of United's squad, and think of how many of them were around from before Rafa's time.

The Star claim that George Gillett has laid the blame of Liverpool's "Premiership slump" at Rafa Benitez's "rant" at Alex Ferguson. The Express claim that Rafa Benitez "must" win the PL to "save his job" after criticism from George Gillett.

You can always depend on one of these clowns to put their foot in it.

That is irrelevant. My point was that Ferguson has long since had a foundation in his squad to shape it and improve on it as he sees fit. Rafa has not.

Ferguson has been building his current squad with often-expensive signings (as well as some bargains) dating back to 2001, and with four home-grown stalwarts (Giggs, Scholes, Neville and Brown) dating back to between 1991 and 1998. And they have recent success behind them that clearly makes it easier.

Oh for christ sake, how did Rafa's spending come back up?

We all know he's spent £17billion while Ferguson has only spent £100

Let's not bother - it'll achieve nothing. It'll be the same people saying the exact same things and not changing their opinions no matter how many points for or against their particular view point are made.

Whats the implications of Rafa being sacked come the end of the season. Does anyone believe the Spanish exodus will occur if he leaves and will Pool be able to replace Reina, Arbeloa, Riera, Alonso, Torres. My feeling is that the only one who will certainly leave would be Torres and maybe Alonso. I dont see a complete exodus but do believe some will seriously consider it if it happens. I believe if Pool win nothing this season then its time for a change regardless of peoples feeling for Rafa as it will have been 3 seasons without any silverware. That is getting ridiculous for Pool considering how they have got use to winning again since the turn of the century. Arsenal also but I would judge Wengers job to be far safer than Rafas.

Just so I have this correct: If, hypothetically speaking, Liverpool get knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid and finish second to Man Utd in the Premier League by let's say four points, you'd want him sacked?

    Why would Torres "certainly" leave?

I bet when Mourinho leaves Chelsea that Drogba, Lampard, Essien and loads more will follow him. Oh wait!!
