Meh.. I've it installed. Install it on a second partition - if it stops working in 6 months, big whoop - use the other partition with your working OS (XP etc).

    Case closed.

yeah, it was just for the poeple who weren't going to dual boot. there's a bit in there about data 'may not be available' after that date.

probably not true, but you never know with MS.

Heres a thread already on such a topic here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=329518

Cool, thanks for that - some interesting inclusions in there. Happily, I still have my old Fallout and Baldur's Gate disks :)

    Thanks for that too

i would seriously not recommend anyone using windows 7 as a primary OS. Dual booting your machine is definitely the way to do it, even if you use windows 7 the whole time, at least you'd have xp to fall back on should things go belly up.

Be interesting to have a separate thread perhaps detailing people's experiences of games on NetBooks. I'd be curious what can run well (not just in terms of performance but the practicalities of gameplay too) and what can't.

Some suggestions I had in mind were the open source Civilisation and Settlers which being turn based, low-fi sorts of games, could work well (and being free are certainly value for money :) )?

Depends- do you want one you're willing to plug in to an electrical socket, or are you happy with one which is USB powered by the NC10 itself. You can get plug-in ones up to 2 Terrabytes in size- but the hostpowered ones probably max out around 320Gb (the bigger the more expensive- and you'll never use a full 320Gb anyhow?) If you do want lots of stuff- keep an eye out on iBood and some other sites they feature regularly as daily offers- its where I got my Trekstore drives (never heard of the manufacturer before I bought them- but they do exactly what they're advertised to do.......)

You can definitely get 400GB usb powered hard drives. I think you can get 500GB ones as well.

just be careful with bus powered USB drive as not all usb ports will kick out enough juice to power them.

some bus powered drives have a double usb connection on one end which will draw extra power from a second usb port if required, but others don't and you may find that they won't give you enough power from a single port to power up your drive.

if you're going to get one try and make sure it either has the double usb connector or at least the option of adding an ac/dc (not the band) power connector.

    My NC10 arrived today.

First impressions are :):):) very good.

Love the black finish, the battery isnt as bulky as I thought it would be either.

The trackpad is a bit small but I'm sure I will get used to it.

Will have to get some of my software on it when I get home. And see how it performs.

Havn't checked video / audio quality yet but a double bill of Lost later on should test her nicely :D

My "Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000" arrived this morning and first impressions are very positive.

No lag at all apart from when the NC10 is coming out of hibernation and that's fair enough.

The right and left clicks are very quiet which was my top priority, the scrool wheel is quiet when I scroll down but not so quiet scrolling up the page for some reason but I guess I can live with that.

Very happy with it so far, thanks for the recommendations!

If you go into control panel you can set it for right handed or left handed use. Left handed use is left of centre, right handed use is right of centre. While you're in there you might like to speed up the trackpad responsiveness, and speed of doubleclick too.

Thanks for reply but that wasnt what I wanted .That changed the left click / right click functions.I just meant that the pad isnt square in the middle of the laptop.

Any suggestion regarding Anti-Virus on the NC10 - it comes with 90days subsription to McAfee but not too keen on setting that up.

AVG do a better job? Which uses the less memory ?

I'd recommend AVG Free ahead of McAfee anyday.

Nod 32 is very good and Malware Bytes

Ye going to uninstall McAfee - but AVG used to piss me off by downloading updates and running scans daily by default.

What about ZoneAlarm? I never used it before however.

Any other useless programs on this machine not worth keeping? Any essential ones worth installing? :p

I find AVG very resource hogging.

I use Avira AntiVir Personal. Free and light.

i'm using avast on our nc10 right now and it seems okay, but i guess it's hard to tell until you need it to save you from something nasty. :)

PC Pro magazine did a fairly comprehensive round up this month of AV products - Least RAM usage was found in ESET/Nod32 but it's detection rate was actually one of the poorest on test. Kaspersky was next least ram usage, followed by Norton (which has improved its act massively this year) and Bullguard. Overall, they recommended Avira (the paid for version though was the one being tested) and Bullguard as offering the best all round performance. Kaspersky and BitDefender were also good scoring products.

I personally use Kaspersky on two machines, a Desktop and a regular Notebook and find it to be lightweight but providing of strong protection. Given it's small footprint, I'd see it as a good recommendation for the NC10 in particular.

the free AVIRA has a pretty small footprint, and it's pretty effective. I'd give it a go first before shelling out on something like Kaspersky.

another one that's been recommended to me for it's small footprint is VIPRE (has a smaller footprint than NOD32). i've used it and it seems pretty good, with fairly decent protection. I don't think it's as well known though, and i've not really found much tests to compare it with others.

Personally I use the home edition of Avast- its free and very effective (though the footprint may not be quite as small as for some of the other products). Its caught quite a few things for me- and is very comprehensive in its feature set.

Was Avast included in the list PC Pro checked out of interest?

I'd second this. Made the switch from AVG Free about a year ago and have know installed it on three desktops and three laptops. Along with ZoneAlarm firewall, I've never had a virus get through undetected. Spyware/adware are at a minimum too.

Did they run any benchmarks as well? The problem I've had with norton isn't really the ram footprint, it seems to make the PC very sluggish even with plenty of ram.

There are several products that seem to do this- look at the Symantec suite of products for example. If you do a google- you'll find lots of people with similar experiences to you using Norton.......

Yep, I've had it with Symatec too, actually Symantec was way worse. I've stuck to AVG in recent years because except for when it's updating it doesn't seem to cause any slow down. I tried Avast briefly, but even though it has a lower "footprint" than AVG I found it did cause a small bit of sluggishness (though nowhere near symantec/norton).

To be fair to Symantec, every review I've read of the 2009 product says the opposite; i.e. it is very light on resources. It's taken a while but they do seem to have learned their lesson.

PC Pro covered 15 different AV products but no, Avast was not one of them for some reason. Which is unfortunate as these products are not static from year to year - it really is worth searching for up to date reviews etc: there was a time when, for example, AVG had a good reputation but now they've gone way down in the treat recognition stakes across the board, just as Norton seems to have really improved in other areas etc.

So my Sammy took a bang last week..

Has been working fine since but there's a slight problem with the sound. Whether using headphones or leaving the speakers it plays the sound but kind of skips a nanosecond every second.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it/where to bring it? Bought it from elara so no insurance just a warranty from Samsung but I doubt that would cover it. Unless I was to tell them it happened randomly maybe.. :o

I'm having a major issue with my NC10. Today during a conversation with Eircom support I used it to change my routers wifi channel and since then it refuses to connect to the Internet. Every other device in my house is connecting fine or has seen an improvement but the nc10 is telling me that "wireless connection is extremely limited". The wireless connection has also become "wireless connection 2" for some reason.

As an experiment I booted the NC10 into an opensuse liveusb and that connected to my wifi network no problem so it would seem to be a software problem on the windows side of things.

Can anyone give me any advice on how to fix this? At the moment I'm faced with the ironic situation of possibly having to install linux to get a wireless connection on my netbook!
