I'v just ordered a 2GB stick of OCZ ram,as the NC10 is struggling abit when i run a few demanding App

At the moment i'v got:Firefox(latest),Photoshop CS4,Outlook 2007 professional,Jsms,And windows live messnger(newest pretty demanding  And antivirus etc

Using about 1.2 gb of ram(virtual ram too)so an upgrade is needed :)

To be perfectly honest- your antivirus and photoshop are the only two which should be eating up system resources- even outlook is reasonably frugal. If you are running that list simultaneously- its a different story of course.......

I upgraded the RAM on mine (2GB for €20) and got the bag above too (€7).

The worse thing about upgrading the RAM is the screws to unscrew the panel the memory is in are very VERY soft. Make sure you have the correct screwdriver and be quite careful!

Always thought Photoshop CS4 was a bit of a memory hog!

It certainly is- its slightly surprising to see it running on a netbook, but the NC10 and other atom processor powered machines do seem to be up to it (I have the full version running quite successfully on an Asus EEEBox B202).

Its a memory hog- yes, but run the resource meter- you'll be shocked to see its % processor usage :)

Re: the screws- you can get a mixed bag of laptop screws in Maplins for EUR2 that has 2 compatible screws in it, should the worse happen......

In anticipation of the arrival of the VAT-paid  NC10 (I hope!) , delivered by UTi and not royal mail , basquille - can I ask where did you get the RAM and bag?

    Both on Ebay:

    2GB RAM
    Bag

Should be active links available for both if you search the item title on EBay, or click view other items from this seller.

I find Crucial great for memory, very fast delivery and reasonable prices.
    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=NC10-14G

I installed the above with no problems.

For USD 5.00 inc shipping, this is the best sleeve I've found to fit the NC10

I have finally decided to buy one of these bad boys.

    What I need it.

The fastest ram I can possibly get for this. (Well in relation to the processor, you know)
A proper bag that I can carry this around in.
An external dvd drive (as small as possible).

    So, anyone help me out?

A proper bag that I can carry this around in.

PC World have a nice bag for €14.99. Perfect size for the NC10 and plenty of pockets for charger etc.

I see from crucial's web site that it can take 2 x 2GB Memory modules. 32-bit Windows XP supports up to 4GBs of RAM. That's great for high memory consuming applications.

Is the Atom processor 64 bit? If so it could support more with a 64 bit version of Windows XP. I don't have my NC10 with me but I'm pretty sure it's the 32-bit version installed.

    That's wrong. 1 x 2gb module - max.

Only one memory slot when you open it, so max is 1 x 2GB memory.

So you can't take out the existing 1 GB memory module and replace it with a 2 GB and add another 2 GB?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,330 ✭✭✭Gran Hermano

There is one slot for memory in the NC10, when you buy it there is 1GB in the slot. You need to remove this and insert the 2 GB you buy into the same slot.

Max memory it'll run is 2 GB.

Just ordered mine from elara.ie. Latest PC Format gave it 90%, so between that and reading peoples comments here, i pulled the trigger. :D

Also having a rep from elara on the wbsite is great. probably 30 euro cheaper if i ordered it from dabs.co.uk, but rather pay the extra for an online customer rep;)

My gaming pc is an absolute ESB hog (a 1kw power supply), and want something to browse and not have the main pc on and not cost the planet literally:)

will give my feedback when i receive it

    Dabs.ie is €363.07 delivered.
    Elara.ie is €386.37 delivered.

Do you really need to spend €23 on an online cust rep?

Elara prices are based on the sterling rate they bought stock at, are based in Ireland, pay Irish VAT, Irish wage levels, PRSI, energy costs, etc..

Dabs are UK based company with stock in sterling whose Irish price is adjusted up/down based on exchange rate, pay UK VAT, wages, energy, etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,211 ✭✭✭moonboy52

:) good point! But elara is an irish company whereas dabs(i think) is a uk company. I buy most of my pc parts from overclockers in england and the rest from komplett so nothing against buying from our european neighbours:p. Having read the thread from start to finish, with lots of people saying good things about elara, 23 euros is worth it i think. I just gave up smoking 3 weeks ago, so 23 euros is just one weeks ciggie's

Everything you've said here is true. But it doesn't change the fact that the two companies sell an identical product, deliver in the same timeframe (i.e., <48 hours), but one is €23 cheaper than the other.

Times are hard. I personally can't afford to spare €23 but each to their own. :)

Great work getting Vista running on it. Still not keen on Vista myself, stick to my XP.

Bios update for NC10 improves Vista Aero score & performance:

That link gives a load of symbols instead of the right page, does anyone have a fixed link?

There are a few shockers on Elara though - some decent prices but, for example:

    Lenovo S10e
    467.78 euros on Elara,
    316.50 on Dabs

    Toshiba NB100 (with XP)
    351.14 on Elara,
    291.64 on Dabs

Other stuff has more competitive pricing but you just have to shop around with these things, prices obviously can be astronomically different

I hear ya man. 23 euro is like 6 or 7% cheaper. Im not flush with cash either and will be paying this off the credit card for a few weeks. Having never ordered from dabs, i just went with the general consensus that elara have good customer service

Its fine, it only lists XP because they dont ship the NC10 with Vista yet IIRC
    That file is fine.

Got that one myself for my 4211. I also got the one Basquille links to above but found it annoying for carrying anything more than the 4211 and the charger. Still it's a grand wee thing.

List and links to all drivers for Vista/Windows 7 here on sammynetbook.

Quick question for those who have installed Win7, any regrets now
you're using it a while? I downloaded the beta and got a key yesterday
and am just grabbing the various drivers now.

As the last time I repartioned a drive for was back in Win 3.1 days,
any advice on the easiest way to maintain my existing XP setup and
have a dual boot setup with access to all files/folders from both OSs?
When I initially set it up I setup D: at 30 GB and for recovery/backup.
C: is the remainder with all the usual apps/data. Can I repartion without
    reformatting?

An external dvd drive (as small as possible).

    So, anyone help me out?

If you have a look on the forum on www.sammynetbook.com you will find lots of suggestions.

Someone posted recently about getting an enclosure and fitting an old laptop drive in it.
I think the enclosure was about $20 on ebay and they had a drive from an old laptop hanging around. The drive is very small.

See link below for more info.
