    Hi
We want to try to recreate the synthy-type sounds on our record live - the obvious way to do this is hire a programmer/synth person and we will def consider this but I wanted to know what is involved hardware wise to do it by ripping music from the record and playing it live via backing tracks through a laptop or whatever?

Would love to know how people have approached it and the pitfalls etc?
    Thanks

    Hi there,

My Band use a lot of Synth/Sequences live. We basically mix down all the backing tracks into a WAV file, and put it on to a Roland SPD-S. The drummer controls the whole show. He has a metronome and a headphone amp also to boost the signal for the whole deal.

We have previously gone down the laptop route - but then you are relying on a computer - midi controller - sound card set up. In my experience this can lead to a lot of trouble and all that extra kit is a load of hassle.

I would definitely recommend using a sampler like the SPD-S though. It really gives the control over the sequences that is necessary to make it seem seamless..

The Akai MPC's also do a similar job to the Roland. :)

I think if you program it right and take some time creating the backing tracks you can enhance your gig a lot. I saw a band play last year (can't remember the name) but they ran synth backing tracks with some extra guitars here and there. It was bloody awesome, very professional sounding. :)
