Pacifica problem

I got a Yamaha Pacifica as a first electric there a few months ago (I followed the general advice given here) and it was working out fine for the first month or so but then I got sidetracked with my acoustic practicing fingerpicking. I played it a few times during this period but not too much - to be honest, I just prefer my acoustic. Anyway, I've come back to it now over the last couple of weeks and the damn thing will just not stay in tune for more than a few minutes, sometimes it will only stay in tune for one chord before going out.

The neck is not bent at all and the strings are new. I can't get rid of it (present from the girlfriend) and I don't have a huge amount of money....so, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds odd, are you playing it in an overly warm or cold room, somtimes that can cause the tuning to fluxuate a bit but not this much.

You mentioned that you put new strings on it, did you stretch your new strings when you put them on?

Other than that i could only really recommend a new set of machine heads, i personally like grovers and managed to pick up a set of locking 18:1 ratios on ebay for 30 notes before.

How do you stretch out your string patrick?

How far is far enough without risking breakage?

OP i reckon this is your problem.
