Think Bono said it best in that all cities have their good and bad and Dublin is no different! To say that the recession is just a creation of media hype is a wee bit wide of the mark. Yes the media are scare mongoring to sell papers but realistically, economics are cyclical and as such recessions are inevitable for corporate culture to keep a check on it's expenses. This one was created by greed in the financial institutions and now is being sustained by their fear and unwillingness to lend to each other and to business. It has been strengthend by succesive weak govenments in this country thinking the gravy train would never end! We live in a rip off culture where english owned companies charge us 50% more than they do our northern cousins across the border for the same products so it's easy to see why people are once again looking for a way out!!

In terms of the thread we have going here look at the times that existed in Ireland when our beloved clubbing culture exploded. interest rates were 17.5% unemployment stood at 20% 60,000 people a year were emigrating. We were raving :) In 1993 I lost my job, was working in a factory and a few nights a week behind a bar to make ends meet. Funnily enough these were the happiest times of my life while going raving at the weekends. The country was ****ed far more of ****hole than it is now but do any of you who were there remember a better time in your life?

In short recessions come and go it's part of life, I grew up in the 80's and I can assure it was far worse than now. But Irealnd was then and is now my home my country and I'll stick by it thick and thin! As long as I can get a bit of sunshine every year

Good point man, but the fcukin amount of people i know that are jobless is rotten, hate seein anyone gettin laid off in jobs, the media hype thing is definitely off the mark, i agree, sure just look at the exchange rate from euro to sterling at the moment, things must be near rock bottom if it's current high like that, dont ever remember the exchange rate being that good, almost a straight swap for a euro to a pound, so i'll be venturing to a few UK Raves this year...

    Anyways WTF

The exchange rate is fckin great at the moment for online music purchases... I bought a sh*t load of CD's on Amazon this week for 144 sterling (pound symbol not working on my laptop!!!) and that came to 152 euro (neither is euro symbol!!! ).

    Oh and...

Yeah agree with you there Key. I got there early and the two boys were sitting down having a drink. I got talking to them and later on as people were coming in I noticed a lot of them going up to them and shaking their hand. I turned around to the bloke beside me and says, "Who are the boys?", and he says, "Altern8".

Was surprised at how down-to-Earth they seemed.

Senan that looks like a great gig;)

Whilst we're on the subject of Altern8, a while ago I managed to track down a supplier of the actual chemical warfare jackets worn by Altern8 and bought myself one, only £45 inc shipping! Here's the link:

    http://www.armynavydeals.com/asp/products_details.asp?SKU=BrtChmWarStOL&ST=2&British%20Scent%20Lock%20Chemical%20Warfare%20Suit

You also get the combat trousers with it but rather than looking daft I just use the jacket... It's really warm actually so god knows how they managed to wear them on hot warehouse stages! Has a very useful big pocket to keep your iPod in too... Recommended for the oldskool fan.

PLEASE NOTE! If anyone does order one, wash it at least 3 times as they're charcoal lined (chemical proofing) otherwise you'll end up looking like a miner when you take it off! Other than that it's a great purchase.

    Regards
    Gareth

This just proves the vintage of the people subscribed to this thread;)

15-20 years ago I didn't give a shiite about interest rates, tax bands or the budget - how things change.
It was all about Saturday night back then - Saturday Night Fever - getting money for do-fors, 20 JB's, a 10spot, skins, price into the Ballroom or Sides - Happy Days.

Now it's mortgage, creche fees, car loans etc etc etc and maybe the odd pint.

    Cheers,

I only said the same thing a while ago.....years ago when the Raves were in full swing i was only concerned if they were adding onto the pints or smokes & how this would impact the buzzing for the weekends:p......now its intersest rates & tax bands like you said;)

Mick I could agree more! I realised the other day that you know when you're getting old when those people stop handing you club flyers on the high street...

I wonder what our generation will be like when we're in our elderly care homes... complaining about modern music and getting all teary eyed listening to 'Praga Khan - Injected With A Poison' on our antique turntables...

Im only 23 and thats the **** Ive to worry about,so your not alone,I think when a recession is on and the countries poor and jobless.people have a good time and dont give a b*llox and just have a good time ala the early 90s dance scene,I think when people are swimming in money and times are good, thats when all the worry of modern living kicks in,maybe this recessions a good thing

Yeah, it'll encourage good old cider sessions -

This will be the year of the Flagon and recession beating sessions:D

Get down to lidl for the €3.50 flagon of Dry Cider, get the old twin deck JVC getto blaster out, the old tapes and head to Enniskerry forest or the Hell Fire Club and enjoy:)

    Cheers,

I would disagree with you there for this reason,

    Scenario 1.
Imagine a bar with 20 heads like ourselves all drinking pints in it & we all got the news simultaniously that we are out of a job on monday morning what would we do......
Say ah fu.ck it sure we might as well have the craic & drink the night away & have a buzz:p
    Scenario 2.
Imagine a bar with 20 heads like ourselves all drinking pints in it & we all got the news simultaniously that we are all getting a raise on monday morning what would we do......
Say deadly buzz sure we might as well have the craic & drink the night away & have a buzz:p

Whether on the high or in the sh.its we can always have a good time in this country with friends that are like minded.....i think thats what seperates the Irish from any one else in the world;)

Ah come now mick lets try & retain a little bit of decorum here:D;)......i still drink flagons regularly & even back in the day it was Linden Village over the cheapest going (thats not to say the bottom of the barrel wasnt scraped a few times) have to say i will stick with the linden or strongbow for the moment.....:p:p:p
