What are the plans for 2009?

We have the 2008 - The year in gear thread. So how about a thread dedicated to 2009 plans.

    My plans:
First off I've to get a summer job, I'm an engineering student so jobs in the field aren't exactly abundant, but something for a little cash flow and I'll be happy.

Anyway, gear wise I only intend on buying acoustic if I get anything at all guitar shaped. Ideally I'd be going for http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/standard/8615 to upgrade from my Epiphone Dove. I'd love the Eric Clapton signature one after I played one in X-Music, I think I fell in love with the V shaped neck on it. I realise that it would probably be wiser to wait until I have a steady job after I finish college (only 2.5 years away) before I go splashing out that much on a guitar. So, my other plan is to get a 12 string, probably a Tanglewood http://www.tanglewoodguitars.co.uk/products/default.asp?cID=26463179&sID=26465101.

Amp-wise, I'm considering upgrading my Vox AD30 to an AC15/30. But this upgrade is unlikely as I haven't really researched them, just had a bit of a mess around on an AC15 once and liked what I was hearing. Also I've been playing mainly acoustic for a while so more likely upgrades.

So what has the instruments forum got in store for '09?

I'm probably going to be selling some gear this year. I haven't been playing a lot of guitar recently and don't need to keep three electrics. I'm going to reinvest the money into a few bits and pieces for my turntables. In general, I only really listen to house music and soft acoustic stuff like Emiliana Torrini at the moment so I might check out some high end acoustics later on in the year if I catch the guitar bug again. And that is highly likely. I'm so fickle.

I'm planning to get a new guitar amp, of the tubeage variety. :)
Lookin' at one at the moment that's pretty damn hot. Gonna keep schtum for the moment ;)

Gonna get a new black scratchplate for my new precision.

And I have to get pickups for this Pacifica I've lying around, put it back together and fix it up nice and teach myself some guitar!

Hopefully, the band will resume activity soon after a truly **** 08, if not I'll get something else going in that style and crack on with it. While I enjoy just playing, I much prefer playing in a band context. I'm sorted for that, got the Bacchus Empire and a nice RG to cover the two different tunings and the Ampeg for the meat. I'm quite happy with the setup I have for that and won't be making any additions that I can see at this point. I've got several different projects I'll be recording and each of them is different sounds, different tunings with locking trems, which is how I justify different guitars :p I've got a doom thing going which I'm recording at the moment, I'll be doing the drums, bass and guitars myself and a special guest doing vocals. Those tunes have been in the pipeline for well over ten years so I've spent a while practising drums so I can do em properly. The TI sig is going to be used for all that stuff and it's going to be stupidly heavy. At some point I'd like to upgrade the Export kit but that won't be for a good while. I've got another couple of bits and pieces I'm going to record, some stuff that isn't Metal at all including one with an old buddy of mine who lives in Kilkenny now which will be largely acoustic based, guitarwise at least. I've got a nice selection of basses with a lot of different sounds at hand which should cover it. The blues band I was playing in has died so I'll probably look for something like that down here, again, I'm happy with my gear for that. I really want to do something in 09 and make the most out of the gear I have.

    However... ;)

On a purely GAS basis, after playing Quattroste's Tokai 355 I want something like that. Beautiful guitar. There are a couple of Edwards 335 style guitars which look quite tasty. I want to get a Bacchus G Player (I've been meaning to order one since I sold my Fender Strat during the summer) and, if possible, a Bacchus 58 style V. I'm also lusting after an oil finished Duke with humbuckers, but that's probably not going to happen this year :D

For 09 I plan on NOT trying to keep up wit the Jones's as Doctor J has some pretty big plans

After spending many years collecting some nice gear I plan on actually learning to play guitar and seeing what my tone is and what tones are available from my gear. I have this ability to find some fantastic tones when sitting with a guitar and amp one day and then never been able to reproduce those tones again  Anywho this is my 09 challenge. If money does come my way it will be for a Fender Bassman or similar.

You need to go solid state, my friend. When I switch on the Ampeg I get the same tone every time. It's the way of the future, solid state :P

I was thinking more tamborine myself, it's gotta be easy eh, just pick it up and shake the crap out of it. Nothing to it! ;)

    cue angry drummers............

Solid state you say. Is this some kind of new fangled technology? :pac:

Goin' to try and put at least 15/20 mins aside most evenings to concentrate on scales and such.
Have played very little the past few months, with the arrival of little Ms DeadSkin :).
Need to set up the wee corner I have in the spare room properly. Not really getting the most from my setup, tis a bit of a mess really.
Really mulling over the idea of selling the Explorer this year and goin' for a higher end Ibanez.

You've got to tell me how that works out man. I'm really tempted to get one of those for my strat, but the routing required is kinda scary :(.

I'm hoping to get my hands on a proper H-H axe. Ideally a bacchus les paul. Something aimed at vintage 'bucker tone.

I might buy a new speaker for my amp. Possibly some strings also and maybe a triple stand.

I am sorted for a paul, but no strat, I had a deal with a fleabayer for a bacchus strat but it fell through:mad: , and i had already sold the one I was using (tokai) so 09 needs to bring me a strat, not a fender though I don't like the new ones especially the s1 switching and a new amp something full of fizzzzzzzzzzzzzz. hope you guys can help chose I don't seem to know my ar$e from my elbow these days.

I still have some gear to shift, stuff I liked, but have no use for anymore but I will probably just swap it for other stuff i won't use:confused:

oh and a car mines broke:P

I'm seeing if a friend will fix up a broken Squier strat a friend gave me. Rewire it and put in some noiseless strat pickups (Neovin, I think?). Already ordered a Roland Juno-D and planning on picking up a few small things, a melodica is one I've had in mind for a while :)

I'm already started to write and record some stuff on my own and will hopefully and finally get down to record an EP with the band. Considering we started recording one and stopped about a year and a half ago, it'll be about damn time!

Want to get a Mac and get properly into electronic stuff. Reason or something like that, and one of those MPD controllers. I'd love to work drum loops with my feet with a MIDI controller while playing guitar, a la Jonny Greenwood.

And a nice fuzz pedal, and some new parts for my Jazzmaster (bridge, vibrato, pickups).

After playing Quattroste's Bacchus Strat I'd say definitely hold out for one. His is absolutely wicked, and kept getting the most attention at our last wee meet up (In a room choc full of seriously nice guitars!). I know us Bacchus owners bang on about 'em but its with good reason. Brilliant guitars for the money (actually that reads like they're great for that price bracket, but they're better than or at least equal to guitars costing two or three times as much from the 'name brands' we're all used to!).

yeah I was thinking that or maybe an edwards strat, what I really want is the upside down headstock and trem unit, will have to research the possibility of it later.

cool i'll be posting loads of pics when it's done!

the actual trem is built really well, can't wait to get it routed
the only bit i thought was crappy was the arm itself with the rubber bit on the end ( i thought it felt a little short) so i replaced it with a jag trem arm which is really long, works really cool

On tour in California for a year!

Have me eye on a red Les Paul too.. tis a custom shop finish kinda like this ; http://www.joetheguitarman.com/1982%20CAR%20Les%20Paul.jpg .

Already had to rebuy an amp here, so no more new toys for a while

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,325 ✭✭✭-=al=-

what typa visa's do you need to go for that length?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 880 ✭✭✭Paolo_M

Gonna start "recession beating" by designing and building my own amps. :pac:
Been meaning to start for a while now but, with the new year and all, I'm gonna get my ass in gear and start.
Have plans drawn up plans for a valve amp with flexible power amp (Class AB (18 Watt), Class A (10 Watt), Pseudo Single Ended (5 Watt), Pentode/Triode (half power for each mode) and on/off NF switchable modes). Pre amp will be voiced with two channels, A. being voiced along the Vox AC30 lines and Channel B. with two switchable modes 1. Plexi and 2. 5150.
Only ever done small "from schematic" builds and mods so I'm gonna start with a small mock up in  solid state  form. It's more to test out the pre amp architecture and mode switching, obviously everything else will be much different.
That should keep me out of trouble for a while. :)

2009 means a return to gigging, something that i swore i'd never do again. what with the recession and all that, some gig money would be handy to stash away. the down side of it is that i have to get a new bass rig first.

..........and a band to join, but thats only a minor detail!:)

I've decided that, starting this summer, to learn guitar theory anyway. Someone got me a book called the Complete Guitar Player or something and its got a huge section in it devoted to a load of theory, all jazz and blues stuff included. Hopefully be able to write stuff by 2010 and maybe get a band together towards the end of the year. See how it pans out I suppose

I would love to do three things this year -

    1. Purchase a Fender Blues Deville 410.

    2. Purchase a nice acoustic guitar.

    3. Find some people who want to jam for fun, no strings. I need a bass player and a drummer who are into Blues and Classic Rock.

If your boat is floated by point three then send me a PM.

Al you need a P1 visa, it's a lot of work to get.
But if you were interested I could point you i the right directions..

Squirrel - It's kind of like that.. but a different red, and the hardware and bits and pieces on it are different, if I am the shop that has it I will take a pic.
