Guitarists: Weird buzzing around the nut

I bought my guitar about 6 - 8 months ago. Cheap enough about 100 quid. Legacy acoustic. Probably a **** make but anyway.

When ever I strike the EAD strings I get this annoying buzzing at the nut, like the string is vibrating there. Is this a problem with the nut? Or is it the strings?

It's most likely the strings buzzing off the first fret, which would mean that your action is too low at the nut. Dont go filing anything yet though!! :).

Do the strings looks to be particularly close to the first or second fret?. If you strum it and look down on your neck (parallel to the frets) does it look like they're touching the frets when vibrating?.

It might be that the nut is loose in it's slot, or maybe has a hairline crack in it,but those would be very unlikely. I'm gonna stick with my "strings-too-low" theory :).

It that's the case, then you'll pretty much have to bring to a luthier to have a new nut fitted. It shouldnt be overly expensive, or invasive and should make your guitar sound/feel alot better too, since the nut that's in there now is probably made from recycled toilet seats ;).

Bring it to a guitar store or luthier and ask their opinion. It's the only way to be sure.

    Haha

Well I was lying at home practicing and I hit my guitar off the wall and I got the buzzing sound. I was like, that cant be the string vibrating so much. So I checked it out and figured out that one of the screws was loose in the tuning key. I tightened it and it stopped :D
