I was in Ballybrack Tesco last night, none in sight, I asked were they on the website. Manager for that section followed me to the till, asked what I was looking for and very kindly went to have a gander in the stock room. Nothing.

Kinda weird they are not listed on the UK Tesco website either.

Priced at 3.49 euro each pack of five.

I made my way down to Bloomfields in Dun Laoghaire late Sunday and purchased the 6 packs available at the store. Just to add, Bloomfields are open till midnight up to the 24th.

They're made in China. I find that odd, Ricoh Japan generally are a 'Made in Japan' product, the same goes for other good quality media like Taiyo Yuden. Japan made, typically.

What are the probabilities of the Media Code on the blanks being fake?

I don't know much about Ricoh media, there might be ways of telling if they're legitimate by markings on the inner ring.

Nice dark dye used. Tesco branded on top.

As well as the main pack, each media piece is plastic wrapped inside. Not suitable for most home thermal printers, Casio, TDK, LPCW-50, LPCW-100 etc. Media has a slight grain to it.

Here are a few pictures to help potential buyers. Sorry about the quality.

Was checking Tesco's Jervis street and as you can see they have them marked on the shelf rather strangely. DVD+RW dual layer, which they're obviously not. In this case the sign is like a mix of two products, the dual layer which people want and this 8mm RW disc that is not a bargain.

Because this product says "DVD-RW" on the cover and because I know that 99.9% of Tescos employees will take one look at the sign and think that the RW means that the correct product is on display, I didn't bother bring it to their attention.

So, right price, wrong product and wrong product description.

Anyone else get them to work successfully?

Just tried one, seems to work fine. Was playing for about 10-15minutes.. Will try another later and post here.

I have a Hitachi Drive if people are curious.

Just bought four boxes of them. There's about ten boxes left in Tesco Asbourne.

I kept the receipt just in case.

mailburner, I noticed only supersized Tesco stores seem to stock them.

These work grand for films, not tried data or 'other stuff'.

    ---

Media might not burn on burners over 2 years old, but you can edit\import media codes in to your burner's firmware using:

DVD Identifier (to show and copy the media code)

    http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

    MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool for DVD-Writers

    http://ala42.cdfreaks.com/MCSE/

To edit firmware and flash/update your drive to accept the media you wish to burn on.

    ---

I'm burning the Tesco DL on an LG GSA-4163B, which is over two years old now. The speed is 2.4x, but they burn just fine.

    ---

All the above are 'Free' to use, no piracy required.

    Got a pack today.
I backed up two Video_TS DVD folders using these.
The first one worked without a problem.
    Second disc failed during burning.
Third disc burned but had a problem in all players when the layers switched and had the look at the back of a disc burn gone wrong.
Nothing wrong with my hardware, it is a dual layer writer but just to be aware it is a gamble as to whether or not you'll get working discs.
I'm going to bring my pack back tomorrow and ask for a refund.

priced at 3.49 untill the 4th/01/09

my advice stock up where possable!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,029 ✭✭✭Amalgam

TVDX, what burner have you got? It might be a Dual Layer burner, but the burner itself might not have the blanks 'Media Code' in the firmware, update your drive, if there is a recent firmware, or patch the firmware, using the links in my last post.

spongbob, yeah, the dye is great on them.

Bought more from Ballybrack this morning, nothing quite like shopping at 5.40am..

Very common in HP Laptops. More of an OEM brand than one from the shop.

Bought 4 of these today but had to go on a hunt...

There are none left in Tesco Clarehall (I got the last one)
There are three left in Tesco Clearwater as of right now.

Edit: For anyone with an Apple computer - these discs wont be accepted by the Matshita Superdrives - you must use an external burner or windows machine.

Just to to add. These are fakes. I asked over at CDFreaks about them and the 'media code' suggest the discs are made by Ricoh Japan, they are not.

Not too upset myself, as they seem to work fine for everyday video. A slight pause at the layer break, but I've not had any that were unplayable.

Here's the answer from the CDFreaks forum.

These Tesco media have faked MID code and were made by Umedisc's Chinese subsidiaries - Jilin Quingda and Henan Kerry.

Typically Ricoh Japan will be made in Japan and the physical media will also have stamper marks on the inner or outer ring, serial numbers etc. The Tesco media are totally blank.

    Just a heads up.

Saw them in tesco clearwater on friday. There were 8 boxes on the shelf. Bought 2 myself and put 3 or 4 behind the blank dvd cases on the shelf above for fellow boardsies! :D
