Ubuntu Hanging on startup.

I have a problem with Ubuntu hanging at startup. It gets to just beyond the Ubuntu loading screen with the progress bar & then a white command line cursor blinks at the top lefthand side of the screen. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 Gutsy & have been since last April without any changes other than regular updates. I also tried loading the Live CD, but for some strange reason it hangs on the Ubuntu loading screen with the progress bar.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Not an expert here, but did you try Ctrl-Alt-Backspace?

Or next time during the loading screen I think it's Alt+F2 to see the console and anything that FAILS could be your problem.

    http://ubuntuforums.org/ has a search function also. ;)
