I'd imagine because most people's interpretations of both are generally completely and utterly wrong. If I had a penny for every time I saw someone wrongly accused someone else of racism I'd never have to work again. I'd imagine it's much the same with misogyny.

Thank you MooseJam. This is my point exactly. Why does racism lead to an instant ban and not misogyny? Such 'dark humour' (talk about condescending; where's the funny bit exactly?) normalises violent and disrespectful attitudes to women in real life.

Furthermore, it creates a threatening and hateful atmosphere to those women who use boards, and AH in particular. If as someone said AH is not 'here to cater to my sensibilities' then why be hypocritical and cater to a black person's feelings? All or nothing is what it should be.

I'd like an answer from someone (mods perhaps?) about the sexism/racism double standard: why is one acceptable on boards (one articulated in particularly vicious and graphic manner) and the other not?

I don't see how interpretation comes into it here, though it may be true elsewhere. The poster I initially referred to talked about 'beating a woman twice as hard.' That's a pretty transparent case of woman hating, I think.

I have done. I'd still appreciate an answer to this simple question: why racism bad but misogyny good?http://static.boards.ie/vbulletin/images/smilies/cool.gif

Not necessarily. He might decide to beat a man twice as hard that doesnt mean he hates men.

Well misogyny affects 50% of the world, whereas racism can only affect a minority (unless you hate asians).

More then that as it impacts on fathers, sons, brothers, husbands, boyfriends, friends, work mates of women who are abused or raped.

What is your response to the few negative responses to RAPEX? (Question to Sonet Ehlers – inventor)

“As with everything in life there will be negative attitudes and I can't be responsible for people who refuse to educate men and feel the device is medieval”. “A medieval device for a medieval deed”!

    There you go.

Theres no need for girls to get so snappy. Were going to have to nip this in the bud before it gets too common.

So you are willing to devote time and engery into educating people why rape is not funny or a good idea.

    http://www.capetimes.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=273&fArticleId=2875127
The director of a Cape Town rape crisis center has responded to the recently-developed South African anti-rape device, Rapex.

Check out some of her concerns...

Women have a constitutional right to feel safe in their homes, community and country, and this device creates the perception that women are to be responsible for their own safety. A woman thus has the responsibility to ensure that she is not raped. Why are we not asking why men rape and why are we not focusing on what must be done to stop men from raping?

This device will not protect you from being raped as the device is only activated once the penis enters the vagina.

There are different kinds of rape including oral rape and anal rape. Women are also raped with a range of objects and are gang-raped. This device will not help women who are raped in these ways.

This device will make women vulnerable to violent reactions from the rapist and the potential of being violently harmed or killed is enhanced. The possibility also exists that rapists will "test" to see if the woman is wearing this device by using an object and then rape her using their penises.

I am concerned that this device creates the idea that we should prepare our daughters and women to protect themselves from being raped as it is inevitable that this will happen in their lifetime and that it is OK to live in a state of constant fear.

Personally, it was the 1.7m rapes a year in south Africa which I found shocking. Products like this are a symptom of a larger problem, not the problem themselves.

    Pretty much.

South Africa Debuts Tougher Laws on Rape

    Associated Press - December 14, 2007
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) -- After a protracted delay, tough new laws against sexual abuse will finally go into effect Sunday in South Africa, which is often called the "rape capital" of the world.

The Justice Ministry said Friday that the Sexual Offenses Amendment Act would help the country "fight the scourge of sexual offenses head-on" and would at last give greater protection to victims of sexual crimes.

For the first time, victims will be able to go to court to force their attackers to take AIDS tests. An estimated 5.4 million South Africans are infected with HIV -- the highest number of any country in the world.

More than 50,000 rape cases were reported last year, almost 150 per day. Based on reported cases alone, South Africa has 114 rapes per 100,000 people, compared with a rate of 32 rapes per 100,000 in the United States, according to police figures. Women's rights groups estimate that only one in nine rapes is reported to police.

The definition of rape was until now narrow and outdated. Attacks on children, for instance, were often classified as indecent assault, not rape -- even though the young are often targeted because of the mistaken belief that sex with a child can rid the body of the HIV virus.

The new law says that sexual penetration by objects other than a penis would be classed as rape -- which usually is punished with a life sentence -- rather than sexual assault, for which there are lesser sentences. For the first time, male-on-male sexual assault is classed as rape.

Theres some amount of rape talk on boards these days! The similar threads down the bottom of the page are another indication!

Also, what about the flipside to this. Women can rape men! Women can also seduce men and wear one of these, either to injure the man or accuse him of false rape! Theres way too many variables in this to jsut release this weapon into the public!

    1. An invitation for AIDS

    2. I'd imagine an invitation to murder.

    Personally, I think it's a ridiculous idea.

As a poster mentioned earlier, once an attack has gone far enough for that device to be effective, a violation has already occurred to the victim's body.

It's a medieval device which was used as protection in societies where women were frequently objectified and abused. Rape did not cause the same stir in medieval society as it does now. (often, an offender would have to commit a number of rapes before a punishment was enforced)

It's a medieval object that was used in medieval times. It's got no place in our society.

    *IMO*

Imagine the scandal if it was available here. Mary Harney would say that it'll made available to all women under a certain age and then 2weeks later it'll be "oh no,no,no, we're putting this on the back burner for a while".

Indeed, it's 1.7 million out of a population of 47.9 million. That's approx 1 in every 30 people. Even relatively anti-social people will no more than 30 others because of friends/family/neighbours/collegues. The fact that chances are at least one person you know will be raped every single year is pretty messed up :S

When you take to account that the women, men and children who are most likely to be raped are from poorer socio economic backgrounds and urban environments, that 47.9m becomes a lot less.

No more curious than "Jeez, guys keep raping me, guess I'd better make my minge into a carnivore."

Kudos though. The Vagina Dentale, someone's been reading their Freud.

All the guys terrified their ex's are going to lure them back into bed and use this on them what are ye on about... women have had access to knives, hooks and blades for long time and ye all still have you're genentalia!

As for the impliment itself... its horrble that was even invented. To me its a sign of the total desperation and fear endured by the women of south africa.
The worst thing is i think it will result in more murders not less rapes
