How come Brian Carney has fallen so far out of favour, so fast ? When Munster fielded an under-strength 22 against Ulster, he didn't feature. Is he injured ? Or retired ? (do I need to get my coat ?)

Injured at the moment I think. As for falling out of favour - probably more to do with the arrival of Doug Howlett and Ian Dowling really upping his game in the last while.

He's probably the biggest anti-climax signing in Irish rugby. Wasn't he even selected in our world cup squad on reputation alone? Didn't one Rob Kearney miss out on the squad due to his inclusion iirc? (possibly somebody else - but somebody who should have been there missed out).

From what I hear he doesn't fit in at Munster - Came with a reputation and ego to back it up - but never produced the goods. I think there may be more to it behind the scenes with him, but I wouldn't hold out to see him start to many Munster games for the remainder of his career.

We couldn't do that, wouldn't the Ulster guys be up in arms if we did, level playing field and all that. If you want him, pay him.

He's currently injured. Most of the rumours about him are bull**** too, O'Gara made a point of praising him in his book.

Btw, Kearney not going to the World Cup wasn't a total fiasco, did anyone else see him against Toulouse a few weeks after the RWC, horror show. Great the way he stepped up in the 6 nations, but prior to the RWC and for a while after it, he wasn't doing too much on the pitch either. Great to see he's put it behind him though, reckon he's got a shot at the Lions.

He is 32, currently injured and nearing the end of a highly succesful career so give the guy a break.

I think he has helped Ian Dowling's development alot as well. I remember reading an article last season saying that Carney had taken him under his wing, now I know he's not the only reason but good to see he past something on.

I suppose he was just getting on a bit when he changed codes and coaches decided that if they were going to risk giving game time to a relatively unknown quantity, it may as well be a younger player who is going to be around for a while. If he'd made the switch a season or two earlier, he could have established himself better. Still, and injury or two might see him right back in it. Not a bad player to fall back on.

It would be good if he played for the Irish rugby league team that are at the world cup at the moment. Although maybe he is barred due to being capped for GB so I am not too sure. He is a good player, he may only have a season left in him though.

Definitely the best rugby league player this country has ever produced, and one of the best league players of the last decade full stop. I saw him play on numerous occasions for Wigan and GB. The guy was absolutely brilliant, a wonderfully natural player with beautiful hands and feet. Massively physical and hugely competitive, the complete package. He hit heights of professionalism 6/7 years ago which union players are only now attaining...

He's massively rated over here and rightly so...the guy played rugby League for Ireland 8 times, represented GB 14 times and represented Ireland in union on 6 occasions...now thats a CV any player would be proud to have.

And how about his club career? Hull (SL}, Wigan{SL}, Newcastle Knights{NRL) and finally Munster...has any irish rugby player ever achieved so much? Its unfortunate he's been so ignored by his countrymen who display such a lamentable ignorance when it comes to the 13 man code. By any standards he has to be regarded as one of the most successful rugby players Ireland has ever produced.

He's injured at the moment, is a great team man who gets on great with his peers and is nearly 33 yrs old.

Impressive CV alright. I think people's ignorance of league is willful though. It's not that they don't know what they're missing but rather it has no place in their lives here and they don't care about it. I used to watch it back when Ellery Hanley was the man for Wigan and Leeds and enjoyed it at the time but I started to feel it didn't have as much depth, for want of a better word, as Union. I'm sure other people here have dallied with it but not enough fans to really care about Carney's achievements.

Btw, just while we're trading training ground rumours, Carney is supposed rated as the best broken field runner in the Munster squad, he still has issues over his positioning though apparently.

Aye. What got him into League over Union btw? Given how rare it is to find Irish people playing League. The reason RL's ignored is because no-one's ever played it here, Gah, hurling, football and union's probably enough. ^^

I'm not a huge fan of watching League if I'm honest, but the players do have some great skills.

He played League in the summers for Dublin Blues and got picked up by (I think) Wigan straight from there. Great player, lightning feet.

Quite a lot of people play League in the summer here, some get brought to England on training contracts, Carney is just the only one that was very successful.

Hes very highly rated here too, a Newcastle legend and rated generally highly through the NRL. I remember reading an article in the papers about how the
Rugby League WC is really a joke but one big positive is it gives unknowns like BC a shop window and talents are discuvered that otherwise never wouuld be.

i have to say im a big fan of carney, he went to the very top of the game, playing in the aus lge and proving himself to be one of the best wingers in the game.

i was very disapointed that ireland didnt use him in the world cup as we needed his skill, aggression and speed.

a top top player and underused by ireland and munster, would love to see him at connaught.

It was more like Bowe that got left behind because of Carney. Personally I think that was a mistake, but Carney was a great League player and I wish him well.

He's been on the BBC's RLWC round-up program for the last couple of weeks, and he comes across very well on TV, holding his own with Johnathan Davies, very impressed with him, think we may be seeing more of him on the Fool's Lantern. Excellent analytical skills....and a nice line in self deprecating banter.

Yes and as well as been the Top Try Scorer in Australia in his year season down there as well as been chosen as winger of the season in the toughest league in the world. He was also selected on the Wprls team of the Year a few years ago.
