I got this virus too . I had been running McAfee Security Center but someone download it past this. wasn't me

I got a blank Internet home page
    A security 7 tool bar
A changing blue to red shield icon that has a pop up yellow speech bubble.
That said I may have a malisius software or virus Blah blah blah.
My Internet and computer slowed down a bit

So I tried a few things on this thread.

Computer wouldn’t let me do windows XP system restore back a few days
I reinstalled Internet explore which ran windows malicious software removal tool don’t know if that done anything haha :D
Checked and changed my lan settings ……..………………as per Itsdacraic
Downloaded and ran Lavasoft\Ad-Aware…….…………….as per Itsdacraic
    Downloaded and ran Avast(www.avast.com)…………as per.Nevf
Downloaded and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware…………..as per yoyo
They all found things like eggs or Trojan sometin or other also registry changes and ****.
one found 100+ infected files Sum found 8 critical infections sum cookies too. Avast scaned after I rebooted and it picked out a lot.
I just deleted them all around 160 things in all I think. Is dat safe to do ?

Everything seems to be ok now Internet home page ok,
The security 7 tool bar is gone and the shield icon is gone.

Thanks for all the help very usefull tread.

Is there anything else I should do?
Should I keep all these programs on my PC below?
    Lavasoft\Ad-Aware
    Avast
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Good that you got it sorted.

Ya you should probably keep those programs on the machine. They won't do any harm by being there and you should scan with Ad-aware at least once a week.

I assume you deleted the files through Avast and Ad aware? If so they should be fine. I would reboot and scan with ad-aware and avast again and just make sure that the results come up clean again.

I wouldn't trust McAfee with a lump of coal.
Add Norton and Symantec 'anti-virus' to that list. :)

K, about a week ago or so when all this started i opened a mail from my friend but didnt click the download bar when it came up? As i write i am running mcAfee, will it pick it up if my laptop has it??
    So worried :(
Hate hackers, hope they die :(
Download AVG or Avast, (IMO preferably the latter, they're both free). Run the scan, if you have any viruses, tell us what you find and we'll help you from there.

Virus is quite cleverly connecting through port 9090, a universal connection for the internet used by windows sidebar and apps like Google Desktop, with minimal of security interference and maximum damage potential. Believe it or not, 9090 is less secure than port 80 or 8080.

I'v got 17 mails with the link in my mailbox in the last week.

    My friends are tools.
Can the tools that Bemlyn08 used be found in portable versions? So I can run them off a USB key
