DNS/MX/server-friendly providers

    As an unashamed geek / hacker / programmer / network engineer I've always run my own DNS, MX, web and various other services from my home systems. In the UK I used Nildram, the first ADSL provider there and IME the best unusual-technical-requirement-friendly one. Static IP on residential contract with no hassle, no port-blocking or other issues with my running low-volume servers (port 25 is blocked by default but trivially lifted) and I never found a question they couldn't adequately answer with at most one referral to another technician.

    Any thoughts on providers here which are competent and willing to deal with more than your basic web-and-email customer?

    Most of the main ones on a Buisness package. Almost none on a basic domestic package.

    The rules ensure Suppliers/ISPs don't pimp their own wares. You should get some user/customer feedback here eventually.

    The 1st hurdle is actually GETTING broadband.

    Roughly in order of Performance for your needs with Static IP possible (depending on Location):
    Fibre
    LLU DSL
    UPC Cable or Digiweb Metro (Fixed Wireless)
    Retail DSL (Bitstream, eircom and resold by others)
    Other Fixed Wireless.

    EDGE/GPRS/3G/HSDPA "Mobile" nor it's Nomadic Cousins Ripwave & Clearwire will do what you want. Domestic Satellite 2 way is not feasible to have what you want, it would be a Buisness Class package.

    Some of the higher end Domestic packages on the List above may have the flexibility you want, but you are better getting a Buisness Deal. Some services have a de-facto static IP (assigned by DHCP).

    Speed and latency are separate issues to consider.

    ack, I didn't mean to be inviting comment direct from suppliers.

    Thanks for the helpful response; I've almost resigned myself to going to a business package as it is, though I don't need the low contention that usually makes for the big price point.

    We're out in the sticks (Glenealy, Wicklow) so no Fibre; apparently our exchange has just been activated for ADSL, but I don't know if anyone other than Eircom have LLU equipment/ties in there yet, or plans. There's a local wireless mesh net but I've yet to get answers from them on my points of interest. At the moment it's looking like a BT domestic voice plan with their business broadband, but that lacks the package price breaks so I'm still hoping to find a good domestic package. Judging by many of the posts here about the state of broadband in Ireland generally, I may be being overly optimistic.
