As for those complaining anout torrents...I understand where ye are coming from but dont get 2 upset over it cause it could be worse...Just be happy that nobody got killed during this whole experience...Be positive and realise that there are tricks out there...Ye may not know them but in the words of another user on here..."google is a great tool"...Its not what u know its how u use it:):):)

My broadband is finally sorted. After reinstalling vista, setting up a static ip, port forwarding ports, updated drivers, read endless forums, guides, posts, moved my router as far away from my modem as the ethernet would let me, etc etc. But after days of trying different things. Finally. And now getting 30meg speeds?? Don't ask me what I did. lol 6pm now and speed test is giving me about 30meg, which I doubt is right. I'll try download from rapidshare and see. Also torrents up to about 900kbps which isn't the best but not too bad at all.

I find this site to be the most accurate for speed tests:

    I can't even load up speedtest.net .

    Quit stealing my bandwidths !!!!

The speed your line is sold as is actually a case of them being able to provide you with up to that speed.

So if you have a 20mb line and you get 5mb from it, that's part of the deal.

just checked the two speed tests you lads posted. And getting about the 19meg mark on both at 11pm and the same on magnet. Rapidshare dl'ing at 2.2mb and torrents 1.2mb. So I'm happy with that and I leave all my settings alone now. While the goings good.:D

I'm still not sure if it has anything to do with settings though - up to the 10th of October, my speeds were absolutely terrible for a couple of weeks. Since then, it's been fine and I'm seeing speeds up to 2.3MB down very often so it does seem like UPC were messing with something for awhile but it's all good now and hopefully will stay that way :). I didn't have to change any of my settings during the problems though (nothing worked anyway) and it eventually just sorted itself out.

I'd say your right. No harm anyway my system needed cleaning up. Vista for the first time since I got the PC last year is running fast.
    Happy days for now. lol

Lads, at least your getting your full speed for "normal" internet use.

I am on the 20 MB package.

Chris your gettin perfect speeds for a 6MB connection...Are u using wireless router...If u are this is ur problem...Like i adv the lads earlier download the TCP Optimizer...Some Wireless adapters will only allow 6MB through to the computer...They are Built for 24 and so on so forth depending on the adapter but some need to be changed in the registry to allow for faster speeds...Try this out...It has worked for other...If u are Using a cables connection...Ring UPC...Those speeds are 2low even for a computer issue unless u have norton(i hate norton)

I am with chorus dublin 3mb and in the last week or two i am having problems with torrents. The speed goes up to 300kbs and after goes down to 0, up again to 100 and zero again, up again and down again. After a while it stays around 40.

I tried to connect directly to ethernet bypassing router no joy.Looking at this thread seems other people have some problems too. Any idea what is happening?

Oh man UPC service has gone to pot over the last couple of months in Leixlip.New low tonight with Youtube videos cutting out every few seconds ('throttling'?).Sure the new 20 meg speed is great outside peak hours but inside is another very bad story ...Ping has also soared v bad news for gamers...Any alternative in my area? (Leixlip)

Between 4pm and 10pm UPC is very slow yep. Even on 20meg. Not to pushed on download speeds at those times. But I mean timing out when just browsing is taking the p1ss. And I 've heard UPC are thinking of upgrading to 40meg. They need to sort out what they have out at the moment first. Not a stable service.
As for downloading with flashget or IDM you should still get at least 1.8mbps anytime of day. Off peak getting full speeds of over 2.5mbps.

    Here's mine: speedtest.jpg

Who has called NTL to challenge them?

I'm paying for 20meg. I've moved house recently and the speeds are the same as they used to be.

    I have 2 problems:

    1. I'm p1ssed off paying 42e per month for a service that is between their 22e and 32e service.

    2. I moved house recently, while my speedtest results are the same, my downloads from a private torrent site seem to be throttled since I moved, they are downloading well below 100kbs, and they used to be 600-700kbs

up graded from 3mb to 10mb last week ,started getting mad pings like this.
    424093925.png
then after a day or so got these readings on the 10mb
    424117281.png
needless to say i downgraded straight away back to 3mb as there was no change to my service, the pings went down straight away for some weird reason, there still stupidly high but nothing near as bad.oh btw i was charged 10 euros to downgrade,a bit cheeky i tought.i was free to upgrade.

UPC no longer do a 6 Mb connection. I am on the 20 Mb as I have already stated. I am wired directly into a 1Gb router , there is no Wireless it was not a hardware problem on my side of things, just crap UPC.

My speed atm is not quite as fast as it should be, but I am happy enough with it atm.

Hi Sudsy, newish to the forum, I didn't realise norton was a dirty word around here (I've been reading old threads since reading your post).

Can norton actually reduce your connection speed??
