Well the hype has well and truly died down now and after most critic loving this game i went out and got it on release date. now i did love it and thought it was insane. But after a few months I've begun to see that this game is only a shadow of it predecessors. The fun that you would have running through the streets of Vice city after months of playing was still there but this game is well and truly lacking that. Imo its is actually just boring now. maybe GTA has become to realistic for its own good?

I got in on release day and played it for a few weeks then just left it and moved on to other games, only now have I started to play it again and get through the story before the DLC comes out.

I think part of the problem is it has become too realistic, now I like realism in my games but GTA just has too much of it, but I wouldn't want it stupidly arcadey either.

I just dont feel that close to the world as I did in Vice City, where you could have a Business on the side making money for you and a garage where you could store your cars instead of parking them on the street where the AI drivers crash into them.

Also there are far too much police patroling the streets. Lately have have less than a 50/50 chance of robbing a car without getting a wanted level, even if i check araound first as soon as I start a cop spawns. I even got a wanted level for trying to blow up a bank van by constantly ramming it into a wall. I did it in the docks so there would be no police around. Then I get a wanted level for no reason while Im in the process of doing it.

Its hard to have even a bit of fun in this game with the cops all over you, compared to other GTA where you could wreck a street before they went after you. This GTA though is not as good by a long shot, to me it feels like GTA 3 with better graphics as you are so limited in what you can do.

Vice City and SA gave the played far more freedom and then the radio, the radio was a massive let down in this GTA. I have always been a fan of the series since the very first game and 4 is the first to let the standaed slide, I think the series has had its peak in Vice City and is now on the way down.

I do think GTA4 is a very good game just not the best thing ever that all the critics say, its like they are afraid to say anything bad about the game. It's not 9/10 game at all, more like 7.5/10 it was hyped like Halo 3, that was just another average shooter no where near a 9/10, now CoD 4 on the other hand was an epic FPS game.

I'm still enjoying the multiplayer co-op... well kinda... I'm about 2 million from level 10, so it has become a bit of a grind.

I'll be interested in seeing what the DLC brings.

any info on what the DLC is btw?

I haven't completed the game. It was/is compelling, and the world is amazing, but other games have come and gone and be far more immersive, which is a strange thing to say. I also have yet to enjoy any aspect of the MP.

    What Captain Chaos said.

I find online to be very dull. Its a bunch of kiddies going around constantly killing each other. Not very fun at all (i only really play online free-roam).

When SA came out, i said to myself "this is the best game i ever played". when IV came out, i said to myself; "San Andreas is still the best game i ever played".

Its good. But not great. and never will be. I agree with the 7.5/10 rating. 10/10 as some websites gave it, is just too much.

Yeah I'd have to agree. Nowhere near a 10/10 once the hype grinds to a halt. Got it on release too and although it was very good it just didn't draw me in that much. I mean after playing vice city/San Andreas I knew my way around like I was living there. GTA4 never drew me in as much, up to the point that I always need to consult the map and just don't have a general care for the city. The cops do definitely spoil the fun as it places a lot of restriction on the laugh you can have. I think the transition to next gen was a bit of a stumbling block as they made the game too shiny and realistic to show off the new hardware. I'm hoping the next in the series will return once more to its fun loving roots.

I played it. I finished it. I got the two endings. I went for 100%. I left myself with half the pigeons and stunts to do. But I haven't played it in about 5 months now. And to be perfectly honest, I don't think I'll bother with it again. At least not in the foreseeable future.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a great game, with a great storyline, but for some reason the replay value doesn't seem to be in it this time round.

Completed it a few days ago and like the others have said it doesn't have the replay value or the humour that other GTA games had.

It will go down as the most overhyped game of all time IMO

that still belongs to Halo! everyone agrees this is an excellent game and i believe that too. i just think everyone is a little bummed about the realtistic change in direction. the only things realism improved was the driving and the shooting of a rpg! things i miss is the humour and the variety of missions(in 4, it was just kill, kill, kill).and of course, the blood, the chainsaw, the katana, the rampages, the knucklebuster, the little things that we dont need but are still fun.

one thing i definitely thought would happen but didnt was bumping into an old character or two. where was CJ, he said he was in LC before, why not again?
where was the guy in LCS? that mute guy from GTA3 could have shown up with another new woman for a race just like in SA.

im not saying these ideas are original but it would have given us a healthy detour from more of the same?

And still I wait for the PC version. For them to increase the graphic quality, and make the game harder.

By the time GTA rolls out in November, I should have a machine up and running. Hoping it'll be difficult.

    Claude's dead, baby. Claude's dead :p

One thing GTA IV has given me is the desire to replay SA again.

    yeah? how? ive totally forgotten!

I'm not sure if he actually is, but I think I read it somewhere...

Claude Speed definitely dies in one of the GTA2 videos, but whether it's the same Claude is speculation. Also, there's graffiti around GTA IV Liberty City saying Tommy/Victor/Claude are dead. GameSpot forum comes up on Google for this one.

Ya I feel gta 4 definately wasnt as good as san andreas but maybe thats because it was the first gta game I played since the orginal one on the ps one hmmmm......i dunno

Well I've never played Halo so that explains why I came to that conclusion;)

I just found it funny how two of the largest Gaming sites and other media outlets gave it 10/10 ratings and yet some of the GTA diehards are starting to realise how overblown this game was.

But you are right about the absence of any old characters something I should have included in my initial post. Salvatore, Claude or CJ would have been much more effective then listening to Little Jacob speak and not have a clue what he was saying such was the thickness of hid accent

You mean the two sites which gives every game, including Halo, at least 8 out of 10?

Thats the one;). People will always still buy into that generated hype though regardless of the constant score

I played through it twice completing both endings. there was a lot i liked about the game. the realism didnt put me off. i thought it was more enjoyable that way. i really liked the gunfights you could get into.

but the game just felt a bit hollow. it lacked the replay value of the previous games. things like starting and developing businessess of buying properties would have been welcome.

also the friends thing needs to be dropped for the next game. its annoying having people ring you asking to go out.

overall though i think it was a good game but could have been better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,788 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I only had the game for about 2 weeks on the PS3. I played it fairly solid for the first week (but didn't play it anywhere near as much as SA and VC they where just addictive) once I'd finished the storeys I lost interest there just didn't seem to be anything to do.

It looked great though and the driving was really good but on foot it's like trying to control a retard using those controllers. Maybe it'll be better on PC?

I dont think the realism was the problem i think it was the fact that once your done the story, youre done the game. In games like San Andreas you could go on for hours and hours acquiring all the extra businesses and taking over everyting from a quarry to winning street races (gta4s were terrible and way to long). I love the realism of 4 i just think that the developers thought they could get away with a lower quality game if they just made it shiny enough

not when you see said websites giving bioshock on the ps3 10/10. if that's worth 10/10 then GTA IV is worth 20/10 tbh.

anyways that's beside the point of the thread.

i got GTA IV on release, and cleared it within 3/4 weeks. it was a good game, little over hyped and somethings i loved from vice city were missing and thankfully somethings that were added for SA were also taken out which was a good move.

i think the one thing i was most disappointed with was you play this guy who takes no **** from anybody, yet he gets pushed over doing ****ty missions for complete pussies. i think the whole mission area needs a rethink.

Halo has one of the best online experiences you can play. GTAIV was good but i agree there is little to do once you finish the plot. Earning money was pointless and they should have kept the businesses, buying buildings etc in. Great physics, plot and characters though and I liked the radio station. It wasn't as good as Vice City but far more enjoyable that San Andreas.

I'll forgive GTA4 it's flaws being the first in a new series but if they make a mess of GTA4 Vice city then there'll be hell to pay. :D

i thought the story mode was too easy

Well personally i thought it was great! I mean sure San andreas is an unreal game but GTA4 definately matches it!

i think that is incredibley harsh, its a well made game with very good online functions. nobody here has denied its a great game and games like saints row 2 shows how hard it is to aspire to the quality of rockstars games. same happened on ps2, no one could match rockstar.

whats disappointing is the lack of fun because of the realism, rockstar thought it was a good idea to remove a lot of what made GTA like the rampages, crazy non sensical weapons, ambulence, taxi, mad missions that had nothing to do with the main story or guns(too much shooting in gta4), businesses, those mini game vans- need i go on?

The only reason i'd play it now is for cub3d game, highly addictive.

Aye its not fun, the characters have **** all personality and theres feck all to do.
Once you get over the explosions and the nice addition of throwing grenades out the car its all downhill.

    Must try Saints Row.
