Well its been a long time since ive seen teh quake2 menu
Basically u have to know what patch is the server running on - i'd say its 3.20 so download that and install .
After this is done u should basically look for "multiplayer" option and then "join server" [ or smth similar ] option - input server address and there you go.

But the best way to fully enjoy your multiplayer game is to visit this page here and read this relatively long article.
