My mam has mentioned that herself and my dad will be reviewing the financial situation after Christmas with a view to expanding the fleet (he's yet to be convinced as he's never the one left stuck). This is so that we don't have the inconvenience of sharing 2 cars and going 3 different places every morning at different times. This leaves one of us (me or my mam) stuck somewhere WAAAY to early or me missing classes to drop someone home from work. (not that I'm making many of them with the amount of time I spend looking for parking every monrning when I'm driving).

I'd be pushing something like this in front of his nose

I'm not aware of any great reliability issues with the Xantia, but I can appreciate where ye're coming from, we did have issues with a Xsara so it'd be a hard sell. Castlepark in Limerick have a 01 with 95k on the clock on at €5,800.

If you're looking for something cheap, it probably shouldn't be 2 litre

Xantia is a nice boat, though ...make sure all the electrickery works.

I got myself a nice 1.8 xantia in April. Lovely, comfortable car. No issues with it, although I did source a late 2000 reg with only 54k and fsh. I love it.

For the record his is my 4th(iirc) "cheap" (sub 4k ish) French car that has no issues. The missus last scenic was 100% and that was in the €7k ish bracket so cheap enough.

That'll be his argument too!! Anyone had one in the 110?? what kind of miles do they do....would it do more to a tank than the "runs on air" Yaris sitting in the driveway??

Parkers reckon 50 mpg, how close to that you'll get I've no idea.

OMG you'd have to be mad to go for that (unless you have a supply of green diesel or used vegetable oil youre not telling us about or something) .Get a Micra (93 on ) or a Yaris if the budget will stretch to it ...Whats wrong with the Xantia ?Where to begin ?Expensive and unreliable suspension system ,worth nothing and practically unsellable (cant imagine any model ,any year making more than a grand unless a HDi minter NCTd/Taxed within an inch of its life),ugly,VERY high tax .Dont mind the comedy dealer prices(they would sell you a turd in a can for 10 grand if they thought theyd get away with it ) ...these cars are ancient history and have been for a few years now...Avoid like the plague !!!(OK so there will be someone along now explaining that his /hers returns 60 mpg on diesel and has never given a days trouble -Ive driven Fiats that have never given trouble and Nissans that wouldnt start -they are exceptions to the general rule ...

Whereas the 93 - 02 (more or less the same as the xantia production run funnily enough 93-01) micra you think he should buy is brand new tech and you can walk into any nissan dealer and buy a brand new one?

Rubbish.

If it's serviced by someone who actually knows what they are doing (use the correct oil for example) it is very reliable. Parts for it are cheap enough as well, should you need them.

Was wondering about the mileage alright. I didn't think the 90s Citroëns used a complicated suspension setup??

It's not the ugliest car out there either btw whoever said that.

€590 isn't a rip-off tax wise either it's €11.32 per week as opposed to €8.21 for a 1.6, although another Yaris would be handy, I'll plauge him into not doing it unless it's a van, because he's always complaining he has to drop the seats or lift the floor out to get his golf clubs in:rolleyes:

There's always loadsa choice. If you pay anymore than 800 quid for that bucket of scrap you'd need your head examined...
