I bought one a couple of months ago and have got it up to 79% but the signal on the ITV 1 channels and most other channels except BBC start breaking up when it rains, so I am going to pay a chap €80 to put up a mesh dish . He says that I will have no more problems that the mesh dish is far superiour. Am I do doing the right thing. ???

Lidl have sold packages with ~40cm, ~60cm and 80cm dishes. The 40cm are not really suitable for Ireland, the 60cm should be fine with careful alignment and the 80cm is ideal with good rain reserve. A mesh dish is inferior to a solid dish of similar size.

Skewing the LNBF can make a significant different to reception performance.

I understand the rest of the details except that you say that my dish is an "offset dish" what does that mean?? At the moment the top of my LNB is leaning to the right and the bottom to the left of the dish when looking at the dish. Is that what offset means. ??

No, the lean of the LNB is the skew. It's possible that it hasn't been skewed enough, but it's possible that the dish alignment could be better also. But when you get the chance to do something with it, first try adjusting the skew even more to see if it improves, before loosening any nuts at the back of the dish.

Offset just means that the LNB is low on the dish, as opposed to a regular parabolic dish which has the LNB in the centre. This page shows a good picture to illustrate this:

    http://bytelive.com/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=How%20to%20align%20a%20satellite%20dish

This page is often referred to in these forums, and is a good source to someone new to alignment concepts.

can we get ch5, 5US, fiver on LIDL system?

Apparently this is due to happen later on this year when CH5 etc start broadcasting on the Freesat patform - ( what you are getting with your Lidl system) There are some other posts on this elsewhere on boards.ie but in essence what I've said above is the situation.

    Cheers

I have a small but still annoying problem -
i can get most channele except it seems BBC 3+4 - can get the cbeebies version ans CBBC butthe problem is that the now and next EPG goes to bed at 7pm with the babies - in the midlands with a 60cm Lidl dis hand overall happy with the return on what is a modest investment

Thats because BBC 3 & 4 share positions with CBBC & Cbeebies, but if you do a scan after 7pm, you will be able to save BBC 3 & 4 properly and with now/next info. :)

Is there a website that lists what you can get and how to tune / re-tune them in ?
Hi Channell 4 can now be found as ch 4 not(8350) on freq 10714 H 22000 aand also Film 4 and Film 4+1 You can get Channel 4+1 on freq 10729 V 22000 as 8313 A good site for channel news is www.flysat.com/28east.php as it keeps one up to date with changes in freq. etc

For an Extra 15 euro you will get this http://satworld.ie/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=100

    or

For an Extra 20 euro you will get this http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-23-28201R

Either of these two would be better value than whats on sale in lidl.

You won't need the Lidl deal AT ALL. You own your Sky equipment if you've been with them for more than a year and you continue to get all free channels after you cancel. You need to convince the Sky box you're in the UK - instructions are in another sticky here - to get ITV and Channel 4/E4/More 4 on the EPG.

i used auto scan so many times that my channel list is full

can i delete channels of my reciever?

also now i think my dish is pointed at astra28E and sirus05 is that possible
they are much the same channels!all bbc itv but there are a few extra 1s on sirus

Extremely unlikely. There are no BBC/ITV channels on Sirus. If you point the dish at 28E, and scan the Sirus list (or the Hotbird list, or the Turksat list) you will only get the channels on 28E if there is only one LNB on your dish. You could get a freak reflection off a window, but it's still extremely unlikely.

Are you certain there are a few extra on the Sirus list? If yes, if you give the details, or check against the lists at flysat or lyngsat, we will be able to see if they are indeed from Sirus.

You can delete channels no problem. Usually, go to view list (OK on remote), press 5 to edit, enter password (usually 0000), then you can delete one by one, by selecting the channel and pressing 1, or delete all by pressing 6. If all are selected to delete, you can de-select any channels by pressing 1. I usually use this method to trim down a list of the rubbish (more rubbish than good on any sat).

You may have many radio channels listed as well that you don't want, and you can trim those down in a similar manner.

Can this system be tuned into a tv that doesn't have an a/v button?

If you mean the TV doesn't have a SCART socket, an older TV with just a RF socket, then yes, but you will need something with an analogue tuner, like a VCR or DVD recorder (needs to have SCART input and RF output).

Plug scart cable from SL65 to the VCR input (may be a blue connector, marked "decoder" or similar), then connect the TV to the VCR (RF out) with a regular RF coax cable. A TV channel will need to be tuned to the VCR (it's not plugn'play like with SCART).

I've set it up like this before. VCR needs to be on, whether in standby or fully on, it will depend on the VCR (I've seen both). If it only needs to be on standby, VCR usually has to be taken out of standby to activate the SCART port, but can be put back into standby.

Sorry, I see the correction above, but the question remains. Is a satellite receiver with HDMI automatically able to receive HD channels ?

    No, not necessarily.
    plodder wrote: »
[edit again]Looked into it a bit. I'm pretty sure it doesn't receive HD channels. I guess, if it looks too good to be true, ....

Correct, the one Lidl is selling doesn't do HD (MPEG-4).

    Hi guys,

I just purchased a Silvercrest satellite receiver (without the satellite disc, just the box).
Now i have no sattelite dish but i do have chorus broadband, and i get the basic 4 channels (rte1 ,2 tv3 and tng4) using the broadband signal...i dont know much, the chorus guy just set it up for me.
now i got this receiver hoping i could use this .....broadband to get free to air channels, already connected to tv and getting nothing.
do i actually need a satelite receiver or can the chorus broadband reciever act as a sateliite dish?
    any help appreciated :)

A satellite receiver needs a satellite dish nothing else works.

does the sky card work in the lidl 80gb reciever box?
    my.php?image=satreceivergl8.jpg

No you need a sky box for a sky card in general terms.

dish on the roof of our apartment.. when u search on the box it picks
up all the sky channels but says they are scrambled. is there any way to unscramble them???

    thanks

The only way to watch sky channels is on a sky box and by paying sky....this lidl box will only pick up the satellite free to air channels eg bbc`s itv channel four,e4 etc

Digital text, such as BBCi, SkyText, etc will not work on standard FTA boxes. Only work on Skyboxes (or Freesat box for BBCi).

Similarly, the EPG data is not a standard system used, so unless you've a Sky box or Freesat box, it won't work except for now and next information (certain Fortecstar boxes I believe can decipher the Freesat EPG data).

    Hey,
My Lidl system was working like a dream but my Film 4,Film 4 +1 and CH4 has been missing for a few months now.
I have tried scanning Freq 10714 H 2200 and get the message Service not collected....Signal is 0% observed when scanning.................I have all the BBC and ITV channels .More importantly I have E4,E4+1,Ch4+1 ,More4 etc on Freq 10729 V 2200 with Signal 85% Quality 70% .

All advice welcome as I tended to watch more Film4 than any other channel
    Thanks a bunch

Hmm, I think the PID's have just changed, it's no biggie. The easiest solution is to delete the non-working channes from the channel list & scan the 10714 tp again. That should do the trick hopefully. :)

I have a Lidl SL45 HDMI receiver, connected it up to a HD TV today. unfortunatly no picture from BBC HD although a signal appears to be available on the Info button on Lidl remote. Checked freq on king of sat which indicates VID 6940 but when I put it into setup the Vid goes back to 8191. Any suggestions out there,
    regards to all
A HDMI receiver is not necessarily a HD receiver. And in this case, I'm pretty sure it isn't. I was almost caught out by this as well. It's a little bit misleading of Lidl to make a big deal of the HDMI, but not point out that it isn't HD.

What I think the HDMI does for you, is that it probably displays digital, standard definition (SD) channels on a HD TV a lot better, since there is no digital to analog conversion going on. At least, I think that's what it's for, since I've just bought a HD TV myself, and I'm underwhelmed by the quality of the signal coming from the NTL digital box (over the normal SCART). I hope it would be better over HDMI.

Hi, I just installed the silvercrest system and it's great except for the fact that I can't receive any Irish channels or lots of the ones that are on Sky. I was under the impression that I would pick up everything, movies, sports and all! Is there any way I can unscramble the ones with the $ sign or is there another box available that can do this. Otherwise I think I'll have to sign back up to Sky.

Nope, only the Free-to-Air stuff is available on this kit. Any other equipment to unscramble any subscription-only channels is illegal.

If you want to get rid of all the scrambled channels with the $ symbol on them, you can delete your channel lists and do an auto-scan, just selecting free channels instead of all. None of the Irish channels are currently FTA. :(

However, more and more of the subscription channels are becoming FTA nowadays, especially since the emergence of the Freesat platform.

The dish should not be attached to a chimney - it is too dangerous. The 80cm Lidle dish is too big with ttoo high a wind load to be mounted like that. Mount it nearer the ground and use a stronger mount - the Lidl one is too flimsy for the 80cm dish.

Is there another way to find the right positioning for the dish?

Depends on your location but if you're covered by high res pics on google earth use www.dishpointer.com and choose your location on the map and 28E sat from the drop down menu. THis will give you a line indicating the correct direction. If you are not in a high res google area then try lining up with a compass. It's around 140 degrees magnetic in the West. Not sure about the East but can't vary that much! ( I don't have a DSL connection to check on dishpointer.com)

Hi I looked but couldn't find a thread about this. What are peoples thoughts/opinions on this? Im mainly interested in BBC/Channel 4/ITV etc to replace my basic NTL package, anything else would be a plus. My bedroom faces South East and I plan on attaching it to the windowsill outside, is the 35cm dish too small for getting the UK channels in Ireland? Would I be better off waiting for something bigger?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭Tony

Not trying to be smart but does that thread cover the Aldi one as well? 35cm is small to be honest , on the east coast you may get away with 45cm unless its raining heavily.

Yeah in my opinion definitely too small for the West, you would need a 60 cm to get good reception in most weather.
