Sketch up should only take an hour or two to get used to,
    its pretty basic

not being funny or anything, but if you're finding sketchup frustrating and difficult to use, you most likely will not be able to use any of the other more complex 3d software, sketchup is probably the easiest to use of any 3d modelling softwares available

I'd agree with armchairninja .... I'd have thought that previous drafting experience might be necessary for most of the other 3D programs aswell. The 'loose' nature of sketchup allows you to just play around with shapes and intersections etc. before you get to the really accurate stuff aswell. Plus the free version of it means you can try it out for an extended period to decide if it's what you need or not.

I had a hard time with SU doing what i wanted of it as well. Find 3D cad much easier. armchairninja will know this ;)

BUT with all the tutorials around and some time i'm sure i can achieve what i want to, it does look easy to use. There's loads of additional programs to for SU that make it look even better.

The main problem is that most user are aware of what is actually in sketch up.
When you start one one have the basic toolbar on, if you use all commands you can do much more,
like free-form stuff, and path extrusions

But as said above, if you are having trouble with SU, then forget about Viz, Rhino, 3DMax, V-ray etc
