Repeat the leaving for Primary Teaching?

    Hey all,

I was hoping to do primary teaching this year but didn't obtain the required points. I got offered Arts but I'm reluctant to accept it. I think that if I repeat I may get enough points for it next year because in all honesty I didn't really do much this year. I really regret it now! :(

Should I accept Arts and try to get primary ed. the long way round or would I be better off repeating? Is there anyone here who has done primary t. via an Arts degree? I hear it's comparatively difficult and competitive and places are restricted.

    I'm really confused!!!!
    Thanks!

If you know it's what you really want, then yes, I'd say repeat.
The time goes by SO fast that you'll not even realise it.

Competition for the post grad is getting fiercer & fiercer.
You're young, know what you want to do, have a great oportunity to do it the correct way, for the sake of one year, I'd say go for it.

i repeated my leving cert in order to get the points and my irish grade to do primary teaching. i can honestly say it was the best thing i have ever done. im going into 3rd year now.
it's very difficult to get on to the Hdip courses so if you do arts its not definite that will get teaching after. if you know that you can work harder and that its what you really want you should repeat, its a tough year but its well worth it, (and it is only one very fast year). like you i knew i just hadnt made the effort the first time round.

of course i can only speak from my experience, i hope it gives you some help and i wish you the very best of luck :)

Definately repeat if its what you want to do.

The PostGrad is very difficult to get into. A huge number apply every year with only a few hundred places in the various colleges. A friend of mine took 6 years to get it.

Repeat and get the points next year!

Thanks everyone so much for all your suggestions!
I've decided to repeat, sure it's only another 10 more months and it's better to repeat than to regret it in a few years. I'm actually quite optimistic now!!!!!
    :)

    Thanks again!

    If I were you ...

I would do the Arts Degree as best as I could . You never know, you might discover more about yourself and your own interests and it might take you in a different direction than teaching .

If at the end of the Degree you are still mad for Primary Teaching , Then I would look at the PGCE option in the U.K , Cheaper shorter and easier to get into than the Irish H.Dip . www.Gttr.ac.uk

Whatever else, do some subbing before you finally choose to become a Primary School teacher.

It is not what you think.

And times have changed since you were a pupil yourself, plus it's very different being the teacher!

If you like it though, it's great.

Do some subbing before you decide.....
I did a general Arts degree, followed by H Dip Secondary.... spent some time subbing then worked in a call centre for a year. Finally returned and did H Dip Primary and have been a primary teacher for the last 10 years. I'm very glad I took the route I did to get here.....your Arts degree will allow you to transfer into other jobs/careers if you decide to.
Best of luck with your decision.
