I haven't noticed many people into cross stitching here, but I would recommend asking the people on the Craftster needlework forums, Here. Lots of experienced tips, experienced needle workers.

Do you use a frame ? Two circles of wood, you put the canvas over the smaller circle then put the larger circle of canvas + smaller circle and tighten to hold the canvas in place. You move the frame across the canvas as necessary and when you've finished you can stretch or iron out any kinks.

I had tried using it, but most of the times its more comfortable for me without it :) although this might work for small canvas.. for the bigger sizes it is highly advisable.

If you get a small one you can still curl up with it on your lap altho' I admit you making your stitches may take slightly longer.
