Lucan Junior Scratch won by a member (off 3.5) with 73, 71. Last year's winner was 2nd with 77, 73.

Great weather for it! Did you play in the end Madds? Didn't play myself, went to Headfort instead.

Afraid to say I did Graeme, a big dump. 86 in the first round (two 7's and an 8 :(), and an 83 in the second round. Driver was not behaving itself. First time in years that I've completed 36 holes. Enjoyable all the same though.

Always nice to shoot lower in your second round. Just put it down to experience!

2 over for the 36 holes is good shooting by the winner. The 4-9 handicap JSC are so much harder than the 5-9 i find. Much better scoring.

There's a whole host of JSCs coming up over the next month. Looking forward to it.

I'm down for Old Conna on the 27th. The guy I rang didn't know whether it was 18 or 36 which was useful :(

I'd looked at that one myself after you mentioned it. Would definitely do it if it was 36 holes.

Playing my 1st Junior scratch in about 9 or 10 years on Sat...

Playing in Ashbourne which is my old course so hopefully can post something respectable but not overally confident after last w/ends cricket score...

Best of luck with that Jampot. Looking back on my disaster last Sunday I definitely think I was intimidated by playing with a couple of 5 hcappers. I felt I had to be hitting high draws down the middle off every tee like they were, rather than playing within myself.

Intermediate Scratch Cup is on this Sunday 20th in my home club, Gowran Park, Kilkenny.
Both the Junior and Seniors will be on the same day, Sunday August 3rd

Not sure of the handicap limits yet, small enough field for the senior so maybe 5's play in it? If anyone fancies playing in the senior, give me a shout (I'm off 4 at the moment)

Is it not on the same day as about 3 other JSCs out your way?! ;)
Old Conna is nice in fairness but it's nothing fancy. A couple of holes at the turn are poor despite an otherwise good test of a golf course. I played my first ever Barton Cup match there when I was 17 and always had a soft spot for it.

I'll let you know if I can find out how many holes it is.

    Thanks....

i am playing with 2 m8's so should be ok... Played like a donkey at the w/end so hopefully this w/end I can turn it around.. going to do some serious practise tonight and a bit on Fri to try and iron out the problems

Yeah, there's loads on up my way. I quite fancy playing a 36 holer. Failing that i'll go for one nearby to me i think.

Had a look at the Old Conna website and the course looks decent!

Playing my first scratch cup tomorrow, what should I know about the format? Played many open stableford comps but never a stroke comp. Any advice?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,887 ✭✭✭madds

First scratch, and first strokeplay? If it's a Junior Scratch, it will more than likely be played over 36 holes, so make sure you are organised. Change of clothes, enough liquids and food, wet gear, charger for your battery if you use an motorized caddy car, etc.

If it's a Intermediate Scratch, well then it's most likely played over 18 holes, but preparation is key here again.

You'll find that a lot of the participants tomorrow will be taking it very seriously, so be aware not to disrupt their rhythm if you're not shooting/scoring well.

Other than that, enjoy it & let us know how you get on!

(Was hoping to get to Naas tomorrow but she who must be obeyed has me on garden duty this weekend...)

Hey Mat, treat the Cup as any other comp you've played before, as the previous post said prep up with plenty of supplies i.e. food and drinks, keep the aul energy levels up. Enjoy the day and the company and don't worry about anybody elses game.:p HIT IT HARD AND GO FIND IT!!!:p

How did everyone get on over the w/end?

I had a proper mare start being +12 through 6 and ended +13...

I swear a tree was following me for the 1st few holes with a few roots in the hole keeping the ball out...

Was a day of deep breaths and trying not to throw the new putter away but was happy with the way I got it back togeather over the closing holes of the front 9 and back 9 even tho I missed about 7 putts within 10ft

Played singles in Gowran today, not impressed at all.Greens were awful and the rocks under the sand in the bunkers was beyond a joke.Took a chunk out of my new sand wedge. Then to top it all off they were letting groups of four go out in a singles comp, what a joke.I played there last year and it was beautiful,What has happened?

I played the front 9 on wednesday - the greens were top dressed or something with a dusting of sand which made them look dull and slowed them down a little but not for long. The course gets it's share of visitors (in societies and the like) and repairing pitch marks is not done to the extent it should be :(

No idea about rocks under the sand? Some of the bunkers have been re-done, replacing sand and drainage etc... thankfully haven't been in too many of them lately ;) , but hate the thoughts of damaging a club in one.

Hate playing in singles when there are fourballs out.

Didn't play great in Old Conna. Was 10 over which could have been worse give I was 4 over after 2 holes ;) I won the medal the day before so I was a bit golfed-out.

Definitely a strange course to come to as a visitor. Hard, tufty fairways mean long drives but hitting 60-100 yard wedges off them took a little getting used to.

Greens were very quick and seemed great but weren't all that true. I wasn't sure if I just thought that because I didn't putt well but at the 18th one of the two home members I was with noted that not one of us (5, 6 and 9 h'caps) had holed a single putt longer than 5 feet all day.

We only had 2 birdies between us where the 5 h'cap hit it very close on the short par 3 and I knocked it on the 13th par 5 in two and (just about) two-putted.

That said, there were some great scores of +2 and possibly better in. Fairplay to those guys.

How did you get on Jim?

I played the JSC at Royal Tara yesterday. First time playing the course and managed a +2 74 in the morning. Was 2 over after 3 holes too so pretty chuffed with that. One guy had a 73 so i was sitting nicely.

Fell away in the afternoon though with an 82 (+10). I actually played really well front 9, but just a few bad breaks and i found myself 4 over at the turn. Tiredness from the 7am start and also from the heat took its toll over the final 9 i think.

I was very impressed with Royal Tara though. One of the nicest parklands i've played in Ireland. Great condition and some lovely par 3s. Clubhouse is pretty special too.

Delighted with the first round but gutted i couldn't keep it going for the second. I think something around 4 over in the afternoon would have done me.

    Well done Graeme!

I'm headin to Woodenbridge Junior Scratch on Monday. Not going to play from now til then though cos I need a bit of a break.

Anyone else going to Woodenbridge? Absolutely gorgeous course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,476 ✭✭✭ShriekingSheet

Shot 72 (+1) round Woodenbridge which got me second place in the JSC.

Beaten by a home member with 1 under including a hole-in-one!

    Cut to 5.5.

Are there many people going to the Lord Mayors? I'm out at 12 I think.

Well done lads - some good shooting there. Naas (17th) and Beech Park (24th) coming fast with Portarlington on 31st.

SS - drove by Woodenbridge on Friday evening. Would have loved to pop in for a few holes. Was it in good nick?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,476 ✭✭✭ShriekingSheet

    Cheers boys.

@ Madds - Woodenbridge is one of my favorite courses. That said, it's no more than an above average parkland course, but very well kept and in an absolutely unbelievable setting at the flat bottom of a valley densely surrounded by huge old forrests and flanked by the Avoca river and the old railway line. It's just a nice place to be.

The greens were not as quick as they used to be yesterday but still very true. The course was in decent shape - possibly knocked back a notch due to a lot of rain in the last few days.

I've shot everything from 90 to 72 on that track and always enjoyed it regardless.

Well done SS, great to see 'form' lasting.
Played in our senior in Gowran Park on sunday, took 1st nett prize but played poorly (as usual in 18 hole competitions this year). Condition of the course was fantastic, perfect greens and difficult rough...
My friend won, shooting a 1 under par 70 off 4, getting cut .6 (css 72) in the process. His first ever round under par, great timing to do it in such a competition.
74 (+3) won the junior scratch.
