Help with upgrade

Hi there,
I got some great help here when I built my first pc some many years ago. My thread is here because I mostly game.
Was playing Assassins creed today and the single core is definitely not enough anymore and probably hasn't been for the last while but call of duty 4 and Half life 2 ep2 ran great for me.

This is what I have now.

amd 2.2 3700+ socket 939
POV 7900gt 256mb
2gb of oc ram

I am a student with little money and was looking on ebay and upgrade parts seem relatively cheap. was wondering what my best options are?

Will a processor upgrade on its own give me an extra punch or do i need new graphics card too.

Thanks for looking and would appreciate any opinions.

The problem is you have a socket 939 motherboard. This limits what cpus you can upgrade to (the best is an athlon fx 60). You'd more than likely need to upgrade the graphics card as well. What resolution will you be playing at and what budget do you have.

I like the idea of upgrading my system with maybe just processor and graphics card as the ram I have is good.

Saw this processor on ebay for 65 pounds
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 4200+, 2.2 GHz 939 Socket

This one in auction so will see how much it seels for
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 4400+, 2.2 GHz socket 939 + cooler

FX 60 seems to be about 200 pounds

What graphics card would you recommend as a good upgrade from my 7900gt 256mb? looks like I'll have to get better graphics card too

Oh forgot to mention, my lcd is only 17inch,
would imagine this would make life easier for a graphics card.
