Donation as a wedding gift

Hello,

I was invited to a wedding which I am unable to attend... however i want to get a gift for the couple as a gesture of 'thanks for the invite'. As i don't know the couple or their families that well, i was thinking about making a donation on their behalf to a charity as the gift.

Is this a bit of a weird gift to give? If not, what would be a suitable charity and do charities give you a card or anything to say that the donation was made?

Anybody care to comment?

I think most charities have some sort of card to indicate that a donation's been made.

I think you're in a bit of a weird spot - you say you don't know them that well, so you don't want to get something overly personal, but at the same time you probably don't want them to consider you a cheapskate

I would suggest finding out what they like or what they're interested in. Some random donation to GOAL might seem good, but most people would probably just think, "Whatever". But if you knew the bride was especially interested in animal welfare, for example, then a donation to the DSPCA/ISPCA would be seen very favourably.

You could pick something from the Oxfam Unwrapped catalogue. That way you could pick something with personal meaning. If for example the bride or groom was a teacher you could pay to educate 3 orphans. Or if the are into gardening you could get them a vegetable garden for an AIDS sufferer.
