Interview advice re notice

    I'm going for an interview this week, and just wondering what to say if asked what notice I have to give in my current position.

    My contract states I have to give a month's notice, but that seems like ages, especially when you consider the job was itself first advertsied a month ago. Would someone of similar skills/experience to me be given the nod if they only had to give two weeks?

    I was thinking of saying "Well, I'd be prepared to start straight away, but I'd welcome any time you could give me to wrap things up at my current position." Would this come across as positive (eager to get started ASAP) or negative (don't really care about arrangements with current employer)?

    Four weeks notice is standard in a lot of jobs, I wouldn't worry about it.

    Tell them that if they are really stuck, you will see what arrangement you can come to with your current employer. Don't do anything hasty to either employer.

    do not just offer yourself immediately - employer will think you are potentially leaving your old company in the lurch - won't look good.

    4 weeks is standard......and once you start moving up the ladder this can extend to 2 months, 3 months and more in certain cases.....

    as above if they said 'can you start sooner?' say you will approach your company and see what you can do ....but don't commit yourself. No decent company wouldn't give you the job for not starting sooner than 4 weeks if leaving another company.

    Good advice there. I was on 3 months notice in my last place, which was a complete pain when looking around. Anything less than a month would be seen as a bonus for the new company.
