Learning to use a sewing machine

Hi all, my first post in this forum. I bought a sewing machine a few years ago (Lidl strikes again!), I've never used it and would like to get into it. Is there a book/website that people would recommend? I'm pretty good with my hands and have a largish sewing project coming up and was just going to handsew it. I'll be using thick upholstery weight fabric and maybe heavier fabric for this project so maybe I couldn't use this machine anyway? Or can I change the needle thingy to make it stronger? Any tips or advice would be really welcome.

I recommend these classes! They're the only proper classes in Dublin...I went myself and I thought they were great. I don't think they're overly expensive either. It's the best way to learn.

Also struck by the lidl sewing bug, the websites look fairly handy, thanks!

Thanks a million guys, I'm not in Dublin but will look into classes in September :) The websites look great and I got the mother-in-law to give me a crash course over the weekend. I stocked up on the sewing machine kit in Lidl this week. The machine that I bought is a Victoria, has anyone any experience with this brand?

There are other classes in Dublin, most VEC schools carry classes at night at a quarter of the price this place is charging.

I went here for classes. My instructor, Liz, was excellent, but the classes are not cheap. There are probably more affordable options.

When I got my machine, I also got a DVD along with it, and I occasionally use youtube to seach for videos on various techniques. In fact, you could probably buy DVDs etc on eBay.

Once you get the hang of a sewing machine, all others will be fairly similar.
