    These nuts and bolts hold the lock gate to the ground on the royal canal. Dunno if this is abstract, landscape or just plain rubbish! Any comments/tips etc. greatly appreciated.

    The focus is on a very uninteresting bolt & the out of focus elements don't add much to the shot. There simply isn't enough contrast between the bolts & the rest of the shot. There is also very little indication of what you're trying to capture.

    Not rubbish.
    You could have done better with the exposure & could choose a better point of focus, but there's plenty potential.

    If there was some metal & wood together there, you might have got a better shot.
    Rusting metal can often have a really nice red colour to it.

    I think when someone is starting out, it's no harm to try & replicate images taken by other photographers, which you like.
