Hey lads. Want to go to China and/or Japan for at least a couple years working and travelling.

Only thing is I am in Korea now teaching english and I really don't want to do it again in China/Japan.

I've a degree in IT with 2 years experience as a software engineer.

Anyone know where I should start looking ? Howabout getting employed at an Irish embassy ? How would you go about that ?

    Thanks

It'll be difficult - China/Japan have a highly educated workforce. Your best bet would be to try the international companies - I know Microsoft in China hire many vendors/testers, you could try there.

TEFL is definately your ticket to get there...if don't want to do that then as posted above - directly contact international companies with prescence in these places and seek employement

I did an IT course and a few of my classmates worked in Japan and China after college. At least one of them did really well and is still there. One of them worked in BENQ and there some other Irish guys there so it might be worth checking out.

Is the ability to speak Japanese a requirement? Or would they have companies that have their corporate language as English?

The people I know who went over did so as part of a FAS exchange program for graduates that was running at the time. They were all given 3 months training in Chinese/Japanese before they went.

    Hi there OP

Ive worked my way round a similar route, TEFL in Seoul then Software Engineer in Tokyo. Unfortunately (in Japan) with the downturn there is a blanket hiring freeze among the Financial and IT firms so you will find it very difficult to get work in either of these sectors. Many of my mates worked for Eire, who have plenty of Irish on board. http://www.eire.co.jp/CAR/index.html

As other posters mentioned TEFL is one sure way in, while the majority of Irish in Japan are part of the FAS overseas program.

Hey guys. Emailed the FAS graduate gang but because I graduated in 2007, I can't do it.

Any alternatives to the FAS overseas program ?

Thats not strictly true, you graduated last year right?

    Am I eligible?

All students completing their Honours Degree in 2008 (or who have completed their studies in 2007), including post-graduate scholars, are eligible to apply for the OGP. No previous experience is necessary but you must be willing to travel and make a commitment to work in the host company for at least two years.

My friend graduated the year before and was placed in China last year with Fas. I think you need to downplay the idea that you are already abroad since you need to be at home to register with fas and complete the induction course here.

BTW if you graduated last year how did you manage 2 years software dev experience?

Got my ordinary degree (diploma or whatever its called) and went working. Then went back to do my "real" 4 year degree as a year add-on.

So you think I should just email them back and ask them again ?

Nope, I think you should call them from Korea, (take care with the time zone) explain your position and see can you negotiate a place on their scheme for Japan or China (be massivley enthusiastic), there isnt a massive uptake and you have an added advantage in that the culture shock wont freak you out. You must be prepared to come home for a few weeks induction.
