canvas question

hi I recently bought a roll of pre primed canvas which i stretched onto a canvas frame i built. I intend painting in oils. My question is, should I apply gesso or another primer over the pre primed canvas to make it smoother? If so, can anyone recommend mixes, etc. to me? The more I think of it, it would be nicer to paint…

The more I think of it, it would be nicer to paint on a truly smooth canvas, as opposed to the slightly textured one I have now.

You can apply a good few coats of gesso (50% emulsion 50% pva) then sand the surface lightly to get a smooth finish.

I'm not sure how well the paint will adhere to the surface if there is no tooth (texture) on it. I do this on boards and it works quite well.
