If she gets on with her father, and i suppose you do to! then yes you should have a private chat with him.

If your going to suprise her then you should be sure the ring is the right one! theres awebsite there called romanceDOTie or similar, google should turn it up.

Im about to propose myself, would be interested to hear your story?

Well I proposed in January this year but didnt ask her folks first, was going to but then the planned moment didnt arrive. Suppose I could have made more of an effort but it was nerve wracking enough just asking her!
Anyways afterwards it turns out that I probably did well in not asking permission first as her mother informed me that she thinks anyone who does that is a plonker!

I think it really depends on the situation. i dont think there is a 'procedure' for getting engaged. its really up to the couple. personally i would have thought my husband was an awful wos asking my fathers permission and yes i wanted him to have the ring when he proposed but that was just us. maybe drop a few subtle hints...

grand, looks like that has kinda gone out the window now.... im a nervous wreck too, i want to surprise her and for her to tell her family as i know they will be delighted, but if i ask the father then they will know before she does.

My fiancee couldn't decide if I'd want him to ask my father first or not so finally he just asked me. But straight after he rang my father and asked him, pretending that he hadn't already asked me. Then I called them back a few hours later to tell them my big "surprise news".

My parents loved it, made them feel really involved knowing first. They were out of the country at the time though, might be a bit weirder if they weren't! :)

I asked my fiance's father first - make up a story that I had to talk to him etc. He got all emotional and really appreciated it. My fiance loved the fact that I did. But like that - different strokes......:)

My husband asked my father, but I knew (and my dad knew) in advance that he was asking! Good luck!
