Do it the correct way through eBay and pay the fee's!

If you don't go through the correct channels with the payment then it is not deemed to be a payment for an eBay item so you can kiss goodbye to that Buyer Protection.

If you pay for it off eBay and it arrives broken you can not file a complaint with either eBay (not an eBay purchase) or PayPal (no not as described claims for off eBay items) so you are better off paying that bit extra for the added protection.

You'd probably find the seller is saving quite a bit more than that too, and offering this to you as an incentive so he can save more. Better to pay and be safe, especially when it's a large amount of money you're sending.

Yeah, I have a feeling they'd be saving a lot more than $15 on fees on a $650 transaction.. and that's before shipping too!
    .

You don't pay fees on the shipping element of the price.
