PHPbb2 User Registration Spam

I'm using phpbb 2.22 and I'm suffering from user registration spam. Even though there is a captcha on that page it seems to be of no use to certain bots. Without moving to v3 - is there any way I can improve the user registration system?

You can edit the registration script to put a simple question into it that the user has to answer - something like what is 1+1

No spammer has signed up since it went live
