Reference check - prerequisite for an offer or for an interview?

    Just curious if that's the norm now? Previously, the reference check was conducted only before a job offer but now it seems it's a prerequisite for simply securing an interview. Tough.

    Never heard of them doing the reference check first. Is this some sort of government agency, security services prehaps?

    News to me but if your references are good i suppose its only a good thing. A lot of people put "references available on request" on their CV's so it sounds like a lot of hassle for the interviewer to go through when its possible you could be completly unsuitable for the job.

    Problem is though that interviews arent the best way of finding the best candidate but all other ways cost too much.

    i know some companies do it nowadays if you arent currently working while applying for the position. so if you were just unemployed or you have been off travelling they will check your references just to make sure you havent actualy been fired or had to leave your last employer fo any reason.

    They asked for references and did check them after the first interview. Then took their time before inviting for the second one. Then waited for a while again. But eventually made an offer:) Still, I don't think it's right and I'll avoid companies with similar tactics. Yes, I was working all the time so no gaps in my cv.
