Hi. I've seen some pictures of digital manipulation that I like, and I would like to do it myself as backgrounds on my portraits/pictures, but I have no idea how to do it. I have photoshop 7 and photoshop elements 2.0. Any advise?

I really like the backgrounds in these pictures, and i wounder how you do that, because its something i would like to do myself. But i don't know what program to use, or how to.

Looking at those pictures I would say that the kind of photoshop mastery needed goes far beyond what a normal photographer might use. (We do a bit of cropping, cloning etc. but nothing as substantial as drawing whole background in).

Indeed some photography purists would frown on calling these pictures "photos" as there has been such heavy manipulation of the final image.

edit: oh and I guess that Photoshop is the programme you'll be looking for (it isn't cheap though). Or ACDPro perhaps?

Hi tyr

that sort of work would be done in photoshop there is a digital art board out there somewhere more accurately here and they would talk about things like that more than a photography forum would

on a basic level you would get a whole pile of different images on different layers in photoshop you might get scans of things
there is alot of functionality in photoshop to control how the different layers interact and you would mese around with that.

I think its one of those things that you need to teach yourself. do the photoshop tutorials and start building up expertise to manipulate images stick images together

e. g. get a photograph of a friend and stick their head on a turkey! experiment with ways to make it look convincing (its fun and educational)
email them the results.

I started off doing shadows on faces, just use the darken brush in photoshop and set the opacity to about 20% and keep clicking on dark spots. I made this image using that principle, thought it came out well.

for some tutorials, just have a look through and see which are close to what you want. Also

for some brushes for photoshop to make the effect easily. Once you can make the effect it is a simple jump to integrating it into your picture, have a look on good-tutorials again for stuff on that, such as how to isolate the items you want from a photo.

Thank you, it was one of the first photos I did PP to and one of my favorites, PP is great and all but it's all down to the photo and the idea you want to convey in it.
