DIY install FTA kit now or wait for Freesat?

    Hey lads,

Patiently awaiting the arrival of Freesat here - Was wondering if it would be worth my while doing a DIY install of a Lidl/Maplin FTA setup in the interim, thus being ready just to pop in a Freesat (hopefully HD) box as and when it arrives?

Is it likely that some independent installers in the Republic will be doing Freesat installations after the launch? (Or would ye just contact one of them to fit and wire the dish for you, having already bought your own Freesat decoder in the North?) Assume a 60cm dish would be enough also?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Oh, PS - How much clearance of an object that is parallel with the horizon would a dish need? What I mean is, I'd like to mount the dish fairly low on the side wall, at about the same height as the top of the shed - How far back from the shed would I need to go to give the dish enough view of the sky? Ta.

The dish needs a clear line of sight to the desired satellite.

As for your personal choice, I can't help with that.

Freesat could be a few months away but what you can do is to get your dish put in and wire in the appropriate amount of wires and just maybe buy one box for now and get the freesat ones when they are available.

Depends on how you define "Spring".

IN N.Z. or S.A. it is spring in October.

I have heard that distribution of the boxes will only be through two electrical giants in the UK for the first year at least , namely DSG (Curry's) and Comet.
This would seem to rule out official supply here as I suspect Curry's will be instructed not to distribute in ROI stores.
As a small independent I am very disappointed that they will not be available via normal wholesale sources in the UK.
My only option will be to travel up North or to England ,and buy quantities of boxes from a Curry's or Comet, at full retail price including VAT that I can't reclaim, bring them back to Cork, try to come up with a reasonable price that will still give me an adequate profit, add on VAT (again!) then try to sell them to a confused public bewildered by TV choices.
Then again I might consider it not worth the bother.

I suspect the UK public will kick up about that and it will change quickly. Marketing Droids will quickly claim that it was only "initial launch" etc etc...

    UPDATE

    Companies involved:

phase 1 - DSG, Comet, JL
    phase 2 - CIH Euronics, M & S, Argos, Tesco
    phase 3 - non-Euronics independents in 2009

As far as I know if you are registered for VAT in ROI then you should be able to "order/purchase" from a UK VAT registered supplier at the zero rate of vat by supplying them with your ROI VAT number. They should then quote your vat number on the invoice and apply VAT at the zero rate. We purchase material (not from Curry's etc I should say) from UK suppliers and it is zero rated as it is inside the EU and involves two VAT registered companies. As with all tax advice I would encourage you to ask your accountant to confirm this but it is pretty standard practice.

I think you are missing the point, there is no guarantee normal wholesale routes will be available to companies in ROI for this product, VAT is not reclaimable on items bought in retail outlets in the UK.
