hello thier,am interested in joining the army.
just wondering how many people send in an application for generl enlistment for each recruitment period,I ws reading the next intake is around june,do most people who apply get in?aslong as you come across well in the interveiw.also if i sent in an application now would i be too late for the next intake

also was loking atthe general requirements, eyesight, physical etc
my vision is 6/7.5 -1 in my right and 6/9 -in the left unaided
i was looking at the booklet and not sure wheter i meet theese standards
http://www.military.ie/careers/booklets/Cadetships2007-eng.pdf
sorry if thats a stupid question but i havnt a clue about this, and didntthink about asking the optician

THANKS

Should be fine. It's better than my vision and i'm ok.

how do they test the eyesight?is it done the same way as the opticians,or do they just use a chart?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,624 ✭✭✭NoQuarter

there a machine you have to look into, binocular eyeholes and they show a series of pictures and such that test things,

for example there would be the numbers 1 - 10 from left to right and a line cutting down them and they ask you to say which number the line cuts through!

Depends what it's for. If it's medication you have to be on they will fail you, if it's for something like acne you SHOULD (note, should) be ok.

Can anyone post up their experience of the fitness test?
I'd imagine the push-ups are easy,I mean 20+ is grand unless you don't train. But the sit-ups,I don't even know how to do those ****ing DF sit-ups!! >:(

What I want to know is how did people find the run and 10k march? The run I think I'd be fine for as I'm currently making 3.5k in 16mins,but what is it like on the day?And how did ya find the march?

I'm not applying for PDF or anything just want to see what advice people could give!
Cheers

As far as i know the loaded march is just for your annual fitness test.
Dont worry its not that hard.
Best of luck with your physical.

Theres nothing like a 10k march on your Physical Fitness Assessment,it will consent of...run one and a half miles within Males - 11 Mins 30 secs Females - 13 Mins.

• Closed Accounts Posts: 2,957 ✭✭✭miss no stars

Cato, don't worry, the information you have received is correct.

The entry test:

1.5 mile (2.4km) run in 11:30 for males, 13:00 for females
20 pressups in 1 minute
20 situps in 1 minute

The annual fitness test for all members of the permenant defence forces and members of the reserve defence forces who wish to undertake a career course:

2 mile (3.2km) run in 15:30 for males, 17:30 for females
28 pressups in 1 minute (aged under 30)
26 situps in 1 minute (aged under 30)
10km loaded march in 99 minutes

For the march: you wear your normal combat uniform and cemo. In the bergen you must be carrying spare smock; spare boots; raingear; helmet and a full water bottle.

Had medical and fitness today. For anyone going to do this in the future the best tip i can give you is just pace yourself for the run and know what pace you have to do to get in within the timelimit. IMHO a piece of piss of a run, but obviously the hard part comes when recruit training starts. The worst part for me was the hearing test, those booths are NOT soundproof and you can hear whats going on outside!!definatley stay away from loud music/work for 3-4 days before hand!!best of luck to any of yous going for these soon, youl be sound, just have confidence!!;)

southern... what was your time in the run do u mind me asking? were do they do it there? on a flat pitch?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 biscuit_sligo

You do on a marked track on the tarmac square in custom barracks. Did the run in 10mins 3'. Could have taken a decent few seconds off that tho, if i was to run it again and realise how i needed to pace it. That was the second quickest time.9 something being the first. And yourself??

was slightly injured (shin splints) but thats no excuse, i did mine just under 11:30 pretty bad i usually do it in around 10:20 at home, mostly tarmac and some track, tarmac was a hill, was quite painful for me at the time especially on the 3rd lap, at least i wasent last

You can be waiting 3weeks - 12 months before you hear anything,

9 times out of 10 you will get a letter off them within 8 weeks saying they got your app and its on file till the next batch.

Dont worrie about it,

a little tip. When your sending anything to the Army send it registered post only cost a little more and that wy you know 100% they got it, Things get lost alot and i mean ALOT!

As said loads of times on this forum its a good idea to send any corespondents with the Army by registered post,it is not that dear and will at least give you piece of mind.

Just a suggestion for anyone needing coaching to pass the Defence Forces LIFE test (your fitnes test).

Contact THESE LADS

There's a thread with more info re. Sean Cahill in the fitness forum.

But basically, Sean Cahill is ex-army and ex- ARW. He was a fitness instructor in 'The Wing over for ten year's and anyone who has had the pleasure of serving with him will testify to his credentials.

When you ring up a manpower office and ask for app forms, what do they ask you?eg name,address,mobile/house no. etc

Also,if I was to apply to all brigade areas, does that mean I have to ring all manpower offices and ask for app for that area?Or can you outline what brigade(s) you are applying for on one form?

I sent the applicaton in almost 3 weeks ago now, last week i got a letter with a vetting form attached, you have to fill in every adress you have lived at from birth, your PPS number, full name and current adress. hopfully it moves along swiftly as im now 23 and i dont have long left to get in.

Sending post to the Defence Forces via registered post won't mean a thing.

It will be delivered to the post room/Registry in the bks/base - The guys there most likely won't sign for it or if they do you won't understand the sig.

Then it'll be put into a pidgeon hole for collection by the relevent office and thats it.

Enquiring after your post will lead you down a deadend.
