Am familiar with an M3 Simply card and need another one soon for the kids but does the M3DS Real use the same firmware/software as its predecessor or is it totally different ? Thanks.

The Real and Simply are different cards and use different firmware.

The M3 DS Real uses on the fly patching. It does not require any modification to the DS. Simply copy the set-up files to the card, copy across the games and boot the DS. Then just select from the menu. Very simple and convenient.
